Gore Vidal reported dead
Gore Vidal was one of those rare combinations: a writer who loved the spotlight…and who deserved it.
Without question an important American writer, Vidal was also famous for political opinions and an outsize personality.
What first comes to mind?
For many, it may be Myra Breckinridge (not currently available in the Kindle store), starring a transsexual, which was later made into a movie.
For others, it might be Lincoln, a novel about the President.
Some will think of Vidal’s disputes with William F. Buckley, Jr. (they were on different sides of the political fence).
Perhaps, for a few, it’s appearances on The Simpsons, Family Guy, and Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman.
We have lost a unique literary voice.

What first comes to mind for me was his appearances on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. He was quite the raconteur !

Thanks for writing, Lady!
I’d say it’s one of my biggest pop culture gaps, but I didn’t really watch Johnny Carson. I’ve pretty much only seen clips. David Frost, yes…

The four most beautiful words in our common language: “I told you so.”
- Gore Vidal, October 3, 1925 – July 31, 2012
I’m looking forward to using that line when the Big Publishers go all-in on PODlishing.
