Flash! Recent freebies disappear from Kindle store

You know how I always warn you that promotional titles may not be free for long?

How about for one day?

In a recent post, I alerted people to a number of freebies from HarperCollins.  I was thinking they might be promotional for iPad launch day…they would have presumably been free both at Apple and Amazon (there may be requirements by both companies that a book can’t be sold lower through another sales outlet…there is such a stipulation for independently published books in the Kindle store).

Now, those books are gone from the Kindle store!

It could be that HarperCollins made them free by accident, and is removing them to fix it.

It could be that the intent was to make them free for a day…but why no publicity?

Anyway, if you were quick on the trigger, you probably have them.  If it was a mistake, I don’t think there will be any untoward consequences.  They were just delivered when I connected on my Kindle for PC.

Contrary to popular belief, a store isn’t absolutely stuck with any price the advertise.  If it was obviously a mistake, they may not be held to it.  A car priced at 20.199 (which would be twenty dollars and twenty cents) instead of 20,199 (twenty thousand one hundred and ninety-nine dollars) is obviously wrong…they used a period instead of a comma.  You won’t be able to make that price stick.

However, we have free books commonly in the Kindle store, even new books.  There was no reason to assume this was an incorrect price, if it was.

Interesting, though!  If you don’t check the blog regularly, you might want to sign up for my Twitter feed.  I usually tweet the hot news (often directing you to a more thorough article, like this one, in the blog).   I know some of you get your Twitter feeds on your phones and such…
