Flash! Amazon surveys DTP users, hints at possible enhancements

Amazon’s independent publishing service, the Digital Text Platform (DTP), is in the forefront of the Reading Revolution.

It enables authors and small publishers to get books into the Kindle store on the same footing (basically) as those from traditional publishers (tradpubs).

I just got a link to a survey this morning (and I have completed it).

One of the interesting things with surveys is it shows you what the survey designer is considering.

We were asked to rank some possible enhancements as Highly Attractive, Attractive, Might Be Nice, and Not Needed.

That doesn’t mean that Amazon is planning to do any of these, of course, but that they are looking at interest levels.

I just want to mention a couple of things they suggested.

One is the ability to “sell books at zero price”…you know, give them away for free.  🙂  Right now, that’s a real advantage that tradpubs have.  Having a book available for free can be a wonderful promotional tool (especially if it’s the first book in a series or from a new author).  I have an article on the text-to-speech controversy I’d love to distribute freely through the Kindle store.  I know that having free books does cost Amazon money (in Customer Service interactions and accounting costs, to name a couple), but I’d like to see it.

They asked about a separate storefront for DTP titles.  As a consumer, it would be nice to be able to tell which is which, but as an author/micropublisher, I don’t see the need.

I thought a series of services that would replace some of what tradpubs do was also interesting: book creation/formatting; book cover image/art design; editorial and proof-reading; and translation.

I assume you’d pay something extra for those…but it would be a huge equalizer.

There were several pages to the survey, but I thought you’d be interested in the roads Amazon is considering taking.

One last thing: they used a service called Survey Monkey.  We use it at my work, and it’s a popular third-party survey system.

      Thanks for writing, Grazyna!

Ignorance is inevitable (there are too many things in the world to know), so everyone is halfway there, I guess. 🙂
