Flash! Discovery Communications accuses Amazon of infringing on patents

In the business world, litigation is the sincerest form of flattery.  😉

According to this

Reuters article

Discovery Communications (the folks behind the Discovery Channel) through Discovery Patent H0ldings LLC, has filed a complaint in Delaware that the Kindle violates its patents…and that they are entitled to an ongoing royalty.

Wall Street Journal article

suggests that the complaint is related to Amazon’s DRM (Digital Rights Management), rather than the hardware.

I haven’t found the patent for Discovery, yet.

Let’s cut to right to the chase: what would happen if they won?  Hypothetically, your Kindle books could cost more.  Would that make Amazon look at EPUB instead?  Well, you probably have to pay to license that as well.

My guess is this will take years to resolve if it goes through court (an out-of-court settlement could happen).

Patent suits, I think, are often filed with a broad interpretation of a patent…and don’t always succeed.

Discovery could win this one…I just don’t know enough about the patents.

Interesting, though…
