Flash! Kindle 2 refurbs at $159.99

Flash! Kindle 2 refurbs at $159.99

This one is interesting.  You can get a

refurbed Kindle 2 International

for $159.99.

That’s about $100 less than it was two months ago.  Admittedly, this is a refurb, but I don’t think that’s a bad thing.

Kindles have tended to retain their value pretty well, but the K3 has really driven down prices for the K2s.

Does it make sense to buy this?

Well, there are a few reports of the K3 being a bit buggy, but I wouldn’t worry about that (knock virtual wood) 😉 .  I think that whatever problem there is will get straightened out pretty quickly.  Certainly, lots of people are having no problems with theirs.

This is the K2i (international), so you it’s the same 3G network as the Kindle 3s.  The K2 US only uses a different network, which can be an advantage for some people…but there isn’t a refurb available right now.

So, wi-fi only K3 for $139, refurbed K2 for $159.99, or wi-fi and 3G K3 for $189?  I think for the vast majority of people they might as well get the Kindle 3…but I don’t have mine yet (it was estimated to arrive yesterday, so maybe today), so I haven’t done that physical comparison yet.

UPDATE: A new reader, jbog (welcome!), correctly pointed out that the refurb doesn’t come with a

power cable

which you have to purchase separately for $19.99…if you want one.  It’s possible this is a second Kindle in your house, in which case you might use the existing cable.  Since a charge lasts up to two weeks of typical reading, you could trade off.  But I would guess most of you want the power cable so you can, you know, charge it.  😉  That makes the refurb only about ten dollars below the wi-fi & 3G, top of the line K3.  Up to you, though…

The latest bug with the K3 wifi (I got mine on August 26th) is that it won’t download any new content. I tried all the standard fixes then called Amazon Support. I spent over an hour on the phone with 3 different tech reps but they couldn’t figure out what was wrong. They are “researching” the problem and are supposed to call back today. Earlier, I experienced two freezes and one spontaneous restart but this is by far the most serious problem. The K3 is definitely buggy.

      Thanks for writing, Natliel!

Did they have you try deleting your cookies and history?

If not, start the browser, then do Menu-Settings.

Clear your history (you may have to re-enter URLs) and your cookies (you may have to re-enter passwords for websites after you do this).

      Then, do a restart.

      Home-Menu-Settings-Menu, restart.

I’m not saying that will fix it, but it’s worth a try.

Are you able to access the Whispernet for other purposes?

Thanks for responding. I tried your suggestion but it didn’t work. I’m still waiting to hear back from Amazon but it looks as tho I got a lemon and will probably have to send it back. Apparently Amazon still has to work out the bugs. If itweren’t for this issue I would have to say the 3rd Gen is great. I love the clarity of the print.

I have never posted here before so let me say first that I enjoy your blog. But I want to also let you know that I ordered one of these refurbs (after finding the link on your blog so thank you for that). The price is a little tricky though. The Kindle is 159.99 but it comes without the power adapter so one needs to add another 19.99 onto the price, which then makes it only 10$ less than the K3. I purchased it anyway because I specifically wanted the K2. But some may think they would rather just get the K3 at that price. Didn’t know if you knew that so wanted to let you know. Nice blog!

      I appreciate the kind words!

That’s usually the case with the refurbs (that you buy the cable separately) but I did forget to check that in this case…thanks for giving me the heads-up. 🙂 I’ll update that post.

I think getting the K2 is great, if that’s the one you want. 🙂 The wi-fi will be useful for me, so I’m getting a K3…
