You can now return books directly from the MYK page

Thanks to one of my readers, Vince, for the heads-up on this!

Ah, that magic Manage Your Kindle page!

They keep adding interesting things.

A new one?

You know how you can “return” a Kindle store book within seven days of purchase for a refund? Last time I checked, by the way, that’s something that neither Barnes & Noble nor Sony allowed.

What we used to have to do was contact Kindle Support. I recommend using

When you do that, they know who you are, and things go more quickly.

Now, though, you can return a book directly from the MYK page!

Take a look at a book you’ve bought within the last seven days. It may have to be a book for which you paid…it may not work with free books.

When you click the Actions choice on your right, you should now see

Return for Refund

as an option.

I took a chance and clicked it, and saw this:

As you can see, I’ve opened the dropdown selection list, so you can see what the choices are.

As an author/publisher, I really hope they’ll tell us what the choices are on these returns. That might help us improve our books.

I also notice that they don’t have a choice for “didn’t like it”. I think this may actually cut down on returns…people will feel like they need to select one of these, even though they can pick “other’.

Also, if you pick “better price”, I wonder if they’ll just offer to give you the difference? That could also reduce returns.

Another big improvement from Amazon at no additional cost!

    Hmmmmm… maybe someday they’ll let us reset the furthest page sync from that page… or maybe that’s just too obvious…

    Terrific! Here’s part of an e-mail I sent to the address on Nov. 10:

    I resent that you make it so hard to file a refund request for a Kindle book. Clicking on Returns Are Easy takes one to a page that will not accept Kindle book returns, for instance. Other attempts to find a way to do so meet with similar frustration.

    And here’s part of the reply I got the same day from Munish T:

    I’ve forwarded your concern and suggestions to our development team and we’ll consider your feedback as we plan further improvements. We’re regularly working on improvements to your Kindle experience. I’ve let the Kindle team know about this issue.

    Possibly my goading, and that of others, had an impact.

    Incidentally, I discovered and made use of this new feature yesterday, when I returned a book that had been listed as temporarily free in one of the Kindle blogs, The Special Needs Parent Handbook. I checked that its price was $0.00 when I ordered it the day before (Dec. 14) at 3 AM Pacific Time. But it was billed to me at $9.99. Almost a week earlier this had happened to me with two other books that I’d also checked as having a zero price, but that were billed to me for about $5 each. (I didn’t return those because the memory of what a hassle it was inhibited me.)

    I wonder if there’s something wrong with Amazon’s billing software. (Eg, the free price expires at midnight on the East Coast, but it’s not updated until after 3 AM on the West Coast, maybe?) I haven’t complained about this myself, because I figure that lots of other people will do so–and I’d rather specialize in Constructive criticism. Has anyone else had this problem? If so, maybe someone should tell Amazon.

    Uhhh…. So – fast readers can return books within 7 days for basically no cost?

      Thanks for writing, Georgia!

      Yes, that’s been true since the first Kindle. Some people read a book a day, and they could hypothetically due it for free.

      However, we’ve also heard that if you “abuse” Amazon’s return policies (and that would clearly be abuse), they may drop you as a customer (which is a very bad thing for Kindle owners).

      I think most people (especially people who read a lot) wouldn’t tend to try to game the system like that. That’s just my opinion, of course.

    Now, if they would just change it so that the “buy” button was not the hot button when you navigate to the home page for a specific book. If you’ve got wide thumbs (which I do thanks to my dad), it’s way too easy to hit the center of the 5 way controller when trying to navigate to the reviews. I know, there’s a way to instantly negate an accidental purchase, but sometimes I just reflexively hit the page back option before realize that I’ve purchased the book by mistake.
