Love Your Kindle Fire update available

My book, Love Your Kindle Fire, has been updated to the 7th edition. This one is a considerable change…

  • I’ve added close to 10,000 words
  • That includes new introductions to the different sections
  • I’ve moved the original “splinterviews” to the back of the book
  • I’ve added a piece on understanding your account

I know I’ve talked about this process before, however, I’ve already been asked by someone who got an e-mail about the update how it works.

The first thing I did was upload the updated version to the Kindle store. It typically takes them up to a few days to post an update (they review it in some way).

At about the same time, on July 19th, I sent Amazon (through the Kindle Direct  Publishing site) a notice about the change, requesting that it be made available to prior purchasers.

I got a response back asking for more samples of the changes on July 20th. I was informed that there would be three possibilities after they reviewed the changes:

  • If they decided it was a major change, they’d send out an e-mail
  • If they decided it was a minor change, they’d make the updated version available through the MYK page (see below), but not send out an e-mail
  • If the new changes broke something (that happens), they might pull it from sale and have me fix it

I think during the review they noticed a missing image. That didn’t actually have to do with this update, but they wanted me to fix it. In terms of the timing,  my decision was that the best thing to do was just pull the image…I also described it in text. Fixing it by reuploading the image and the file through a special process would have been complex at that time, and I think result in days of being off sale.

They told me the review could take four weeks.

Well, that seems about right. 🙂 They are sending out e-mails, and the updated version is now available.

If you do update it, it will wipe out your “associated information”. You’ll lose notes, bookmarks, furthest page read, and so on. That also seems to pull any comments you’ve made from the book’s “bookstream”, the live chat you can see on the Kindle Fire.

The only unfortunate thing is that the update is telling people that it is due to “Missing Images”. There was only one missing image…and now people may look for one, when what actually happened is that I pulled it. They aren’t told about all the improvements…that’s not great PR (public relations) for me, but it’s nice that people were told about an available update.

I felt the update was necessary because of all the changes that have happened. I have updated it several times already, but I wanted to move my pre-release speculation to a less prominent position.

New orders have been getting this updated version for about a month. I had been getting a few returns before that. Obviously, I’d rather have no returns, but they are unavoidable…like the occasional 1-star review. 🙂 They aren’t all for the reasons I would do them. However, the return rate has drastically reduced since the update, which is a good sign.

Especially with non-fiction like this, I love that Amazon lets us update the content for prior buyers! It’s just not a practical option for a p-book (paperbook).

      Wow, that is so nice of you to say (and do)! It really makes it feel worthwhile when I take the time and energy to update something. I love being able to give people something at no additional cost to them, but I do have to balance that against other responsibilties and opportunities. 🙂

    Previously I suggested that Amazon should solve this migration problem with a re-do of its basic data structures–which would cost a lot, take a year, slow down the Kindle, and probably not be totally flawless and compatible.

    Now I’ve had another idea. How about if Amazon were to provide “relocation helps” for users who want to retain their old Notes and Marks? That would be a hundred times easier for them, and still provide 80% of the benefit of their trying to provide a 100% solution.

    For instance, if a user invoked the “Help me migrate my Notes and Marks” option after downloading a new version of a book, the “app” (as I guess it might be categorized) would try to find a match in the new version for the textual context that surrounded the old Note or Mark. That context is what pops up in the four lines one can see when one invokes “View My Notes and Marks,” so Amazon could easily access it. The user would then be prompted, “Is this a Match?” I.e., does this correspond to where you’d like your associated info to be anchored in the new version?

    The app would work sequentially through all these N&Ms. It would be a lot of work for the user if he had 100 N&Ms–maybe an hour–but he doesn’t HAVE to perform it if he doesn’t want to.

    Another negative is that in some cases a match wouldn’t be found, because the author had rewritten the passage. In that case there would be three options:

    1. Dump the material into a Lost & Found bucket for the user to try to find a home for later on. (And give him a tool for re-anchoring it conveniently.) This should be the default option if the user does nothing.)

    2. Invoke a sophisticated Amazon routine that would try to find a “best fit” candidate for the user (subject to his approval).

    3. Throw up its hands and delete it. (Subject to user approval.)

    This would be an imperfect solution–i.e., an 80% (at worst) solution. But it would be much, much better than nothing, as I hope you (Bufo) agree.

    But I fear that what I’ve suggested has already been considered and rejected by Amazon’s programmers, because it has characteristics that tend to raise coders’ hackles: It’s fuzzy and incomplete; it doesn’t “solve the problem”; it has “loose ends”; and it’s messy. Coders tend to think of those characteristics as damning–and they are, in almost all coding situations. But they aren’t in a human-interaction situation like this one. Amazon should offer a Best Effort option to its users who don’t want to lose the value they’ve added to their purchases. This is very, very important, IMNSHO.

      When Amazon got in legal trouble when they removed the unauthorized George Orwell book from Kindles, it was over the loss of notes by a student. That shows why notes can be important, and if they could come up with some way to migrate notes to an updated version, it would be a big plus.

      Whether you have an update available or not will depend on when you bought the book. If you bought the book after the update, you’ll have the newer version, so you won’t see any way to update it.

      If you bought it before the update (which happened in late August), you’ll see it two places:

      One is if you click or tap the

      Actions…

      button on the line for that title. If available, it will say, “Update this title”.

      Also, in the dropdown at the top where it may be saying “All Items”, there is a choice for

      Available for Update

      if you have any updates available.

      I have just barely started working on a book for the Kindle Fire HD line, but I don’t know when I’ll complete it (it’s been busy lately).
