Giveaway: my new book, The Mind Boggles

Giveaway: my new book, The Mind Boggles

I’ve just published my first non-Kindle related book in the Kindle store:

The Mind Boggles: A Unique Book of Quotations

It’s not unrelated to books and publishing, though, since it does have quotations from many books in it, as well as from other sources.

These are all quotations I’ve personally collected over decades. It’s only a couple of hundred quotations, but they aren’t the “usual suspects”. πŸ™‚ If you like quotations, I think you’ll find this unique.

I love quotations! I especially like ones that come from unexpected sources, and say things beyond what you would expect.

It’s a bit like my post recently onΒ Can a popular book be a good book?, but with a twist: can a bad book have a good quote? πŸ˜‰ I don’t think I’ve ever read a completely bad book, or seen a completely bad movie. I think some genres are simply disqualified out of hand by some people, and that’s certainly not my case. Classic or kitsch, eternal or ephemeral, I’ve enjoyed them. πŸ™‚

I always like to thank you for being readers, so I’m going to give away ten copies to the first ten people who comment on this post and ask for one. Please do not include contact information in your comment: I can see your e-mail address in the unpublished information. I will not use your e-mail address for any purpose except to send you the gift.

I did make the book available in the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library, so you can borrow it for free if you are an eligible Prime member with a hardware Kindle. The weird thing is that I make a lot more money if you borrow than if you buy it.

The economics on that is that I get about thirty-five cents when you buy a ninety-nine cent title (which this is).

When someone borrows a book, we split a pool of money. It doesn’t matter what the list price of your book is, you get an equal share for each borrow. That share has been running a bit over $2.

I’d have to sell five copies to make the same amount as one borrow.

That shows you how the economics are changing in publishing.

By the way, I do think this is going to be a good little gift at the holidays. πŸ™‚

If you’d like a copy, just be one of the first ten to comment on this post and request it.

One other thing: I’m going to try to gift copies to people who are quoted. If you know you are quoted in it, just let me know and I’ll send you one. I’m going to try to be proactive on that, but I know I won’t find everybody. πŸ™‚

Update: The Mind Boggles is the number one bestselling book of quotations in the Kindle store! I would have thought that was pretty narrow, but there are 897 titles in that group! Thanks, everybody!

Hi Bufo! I’d love to have a copy of your quotations book! I’ve collected a few myself over the years, but not enough for a book! Thanks for all your wisdom & help!

  2. Susan Says:

I usually buy books instead of getting them from the lending library seems I need to change my way of thinking ,thanks to you….do I receive a free book of quotes ?

    • Bufo Calvin Says:

      Thanks for writing, Susan!

Yes, things are really changing! Your gift e-mail is on the way.

By the way, I have to apologize; I was very excited to get it out to you, and my message might be a bit confusing. πŸ™‚

  3. Karen Salmons Says:

Hi Bufo, Would love a copy of your book. I too am a fan of quotes. Thanks

  4. Nancy Says:

I doubt I’m one of the first ten to request your new book The Mind Boggles; even tho, I’d love a copy!!

  5. Phink Says:

Sounds like an excellent idea for a book. I can’t wait to read it

  6. Denise Kelley Says:

    I’d love a copy, Len!

  7. liz2germany Says:

Looking forward to reading this – been hearing about it for a long time now! πŸ™‚

  8. Denise Kelley Says:

I goofed when I just posted. I meant, I’d love a copy, Buford! In my defense, I’m brain dead by 7p every evening…

    • Bufo Calvin Says:

      Thanks for writing, Denise!

No problem! I’m going to guess you confused me with Len Edgerly of

      The Kindle Chronicles podcast

      If that’s the case, I’m flattered. πŸ™‚

My first name is just Bufo, by the way…I know that “Buford” might have come from autocorrect, that happens.

      • Denise Kelley Says:

I did, actually. I had just finished listening to the current edition of “The Kindle Chronicles” when I saw your blog post. So my switched-off brain used “Len.” Then when I tried to correct that with a 2nd post, my iPad helpfully corrected “Bufo” to “Buford”. Not a real good evening, lol. Thanks for sending me the book anyway!

      • Bufo Calvin Says:

        Thanks for writing, Denise!

No problem! I recently wrote “ad hominem” in an e-mail to my family. My spell checker wanted to change “hominem” to “Eminem”. πŸ™‚

  9. Denise Kelley Says:

This is getting ridiculous. Now my iPad “corrected” your name. I know it’s Bufo and not either of the other names that came out.

  10. Diane Says:

You mentioned that kindle fire owners were not able to view your blog in Pulse any longer; I’m one of those. Another author (Michael) of a blog (Free Kindle Books and Tips) is using an app that “we” can download to view his blog each day on our kindle…you might look at that as an option, too.

  11. Diane Says:

I would also love a copy if I’m not too late!!

    • Bufo Calvin Says:

      Thanks for writing, Diane!

Not too late, but I am getting close to that ten. πŸ™‚

      Yours is on the way.

As to the app…Pulse says they are looking into it, and I hope they can fix it. People don’t like change, and I’d probably have to pay to get an app developed. I appreciate the idea, though, and I’ll put it in the hopper. πŸ™‚

  12. Cherisse L. Mathias Says:

Just found this blog and your offer – if I’m in time, I would like a copy!
    Thanks for offering!

    • Bufo Calvin Says:

      Thanks for writing, Cherisse!

It’s great to have a newbie get one. πŸ™‚ Welcome to the blog, and I hope you enjoy the book.

If you have any questions in the future, feel free to ask.

  13. trudie levins Says:

I read your blog regularly. Always good news I can use about the Kindle and Amazon in general. Hope I am not too late to get your book of quotations. Thanks.

    That’s ten! Congratulations everybody!

Didn’t see your post in time, but I proudly one clicked! I look forward to reading it.

  17. jbgator9 Says:

how about one for an oldie? figures I would miss by one, lol

    • Bufo Calvin Says:

      Thanks for writing, jbgator9!

With this method I’m actually paying for them, so I had to cut it off at some point. πŸ™‚ I may do a free day on it at some point, but not right away.

  18. Nancy Says:

I am so excited that I was gifted your new book. I’m going to read it this weekend!!!
    Thank you,

    • Bufo Calvin Says:

      Thanks for writing, Nancy!

Great! You can probably finish it in a weekend…depending on how much clicking on the links you do. πŸ™‚ You might end up following a link in the book and watching a movie or reading a book, so it might take a while.

  19. jlof Says:

Not one of the top ten but just wanted you to know that the Pulse is beating again! Glad to be receiving your updates once more. Looking forward to renting and reading your latest book.

    • Bufo Calvin Says:

      Thanks for writing, jlof!

Woo-hoo! I’m so happy Pulse is working again! Thanks for letting me know…I checked it on mine this morning, and it’s up to date.

  20. It’s borrowin’ time! #1 « I Love My Kindle Says:

[…] are five for you. I’m also going to mention my most recent book,Β The Mind Boggles: A Unique Book of Quotations. I think it should work well as a borrow…I’m not sure that most people return to books […]
