Free: The Picture of Dorian Gray audiobook

Free: The Picture of Dorian Gray audiobook

Thanks to jjhitt, one of my regular readers and commenters, for the heads up on this!

jjhitt informs me that it is because of St. Patrick’s Day, but I don’t know how long it will actually last. Audible has an unabridged

audiobook of The Picture of Dorian Gray

by Oscar Wilde for free.

The Picture of Dorian Gray, originally published in 1890 (in a shorter form than what came out as Wilde’s only novel), may not be what you expect. I think a lot of people assume it is a simple horror story, but it’s much more than that.

Do check the price before you buy it, because, again, I don’t know how long this will last (and it may not be available in your country).

I believe you will need to create an Audible account to get it, but you do not to commit to any future purchases (that seems to be a common confusion with Audible).

Thanks again, jjhitt!

    Thanks for the heads up.

You can also get a lot of the classics from Audible fairly inexpensively (sometimes free) by first getting the Kindle version that has been linked with Whispersync. Wish I could give an example, but the audible site shows different information and pricing when you are a member and/or when you already own the book.

You might try the Dracula connection. As best as I can figure, the Kindle version of Dracula is free:
The Audible version is $29.95, but if you get the free Kindle version first, it seems to either be free or $2.95.

      Thanks for writing, Steve!

Yes, that’s due to a program Amazon calls “Whispersync for Voice” (and which you’ll often see abbreviated in this blog and other places as “WSV”).

The basic idea is that you first buy the e-book, and then you can get the audiobook for a reduced price (I tend to list that when I review a book, for example).

The program has one real negative for me. Once you’ve done that, you can not use text-to-speech on the book, which I tend to prefer (unless I’ve already read the book). I do wish they’d give us a choice of the TTS or the WSV in that case, but I’ve checked with them, and they told me they didn’t. I think I’m unusual in preferring TTS, though.

Here’s a link at Amazon that will take to free ones, low cost ones, and all of them:
