Fire OS 4.5.1 update available

Fire OS 4.5.1 update available

More later, but my

Kindle Fire HDX (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*)

just updated to 4.5.1.

They list the following key features:

  • Family Library: this is the new feature that lets you share certain content with some people, even when they aren’t on the same account
  • Lock Screen Media Controls: you can play music and audiobooks directly from the lock screen
  • If you have a rear-facing camera, you can launch the camera app from the lock screen
  • Prime Music Stations: Prime members now have ad-free stations of music
  • Emoji: little pictures for your e-mail (and other places)
  • Camera for Kids: interesting! Gimmicky camera features for children using Amazon FreeTime (that’s a new branding, I think) and they can’t post to social media

You can update your device manually from (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*)

or you can wait and it should happen automatically eventually.

The last major update was recent…I wrote about it on November 7th, so this is the second one in a month!

* I am linking to the same thing at the regular Amazon site, and at AmazonSmile. When you shop at AmazonSmile, half a percent of your purchase price on eligible items goes to a non-profit you choose. It will feel just like shopping at Amazon: you’ll be using your same account. The one thing for you that is different is that you pick a non-profit the first time you go (which you can change whenever you want)…and the good feeling you’ll get. :) Shop ’til you help! :)

My Fire HD7 (2013) got update to 4.2.1 a few days ago, and already there is a 4.5.1 update waiting for it. There seem to be at least a couple of problems with 4.5.1: 1) you cannot tell which collections a given item is in, short of searching for it in every collections, and 2) Screen Reader (with Explore By Touch enabled) cannot be used to read anything with the reading app (book exits as soon as it opens or Screen Reader is turned on). And some HDX7 people report that the dictionary disappeared.

I reported the two problems I found, but (uncharacteristically) have not gotten any response. They may be swamped.

Family Library was in 4.2.1 (or whatever my HD7 has on it now). Having set it up on my HD6 I did not have to do anything on the HD7, as the same settings appear to apply.

I like Prime Music Stations, though they need to double or triple the number of stations.

      Thanks for writing, Tom!

Where were you able to see Collection membership before?

The dictionary did need to be downloaded again on my HDX7, then it worked fine.

      How did you notify them?

I think we’ll rapidly see an increase in stations…I would guess double or triple by the of Q1 2015 is reasonable.

The Screen Reader problem seems to be magically gone, even though there have not been any updates since discovering the issue. My Fire HD7 (2013) is also now on 4.5.1 and did not have a problem, either.

The Collections issue persists. When one wanted to modify collection before, you’d long tap, it would bring up an Add to collection option (don’t remember what it looked like) and if you tapped that it would list all of your collections and have checkmarks next to the collections it was already in. So you could uncheck those, and check some others. One step. But you could only manage one item at a time.

Now you can select multiple items to add to a collection. That seems like an improvement as far as that goes, but now there is no way to see (even for a single selected item) which collections that item is in, so as to remove it from those collections. The only way to remove items from a collection is to open the collection. But if you don’t know which collections the item is in, you don’t know which collection to open in order to remove it.

I noticed in the Fire 6 HD sales page a mention of Amazon Maps. I checked the Fire 7 HDX page and there was no mention of it.

Tonight I was poking around in my 7 HDX and by jove there is a Map Application by Amazon buried in the Apps…it didn’t show up on my screen until I opened it out of the Apps heading. It is actually a pretty nice application with traffic and satellite views. Did it come in one of these two recent upgrades?

After 4.5.1 update, CPU usage on my Kindle Fire HD 7 2013 stays over 90% draining batery in several minutes and warming the device. Reset to firmware defaults is not fixing the issue.
