October 17 2009: #1 Blog in the Kindle Store!
“I just wanted to send a BIG THANK YOU TO BUFO CALVIN. I’m now on my 4th Kindle (Kindle Fire HD), and I’ve received a tremendous amount of help from the ILMK Blog from my first timid steps on my Kindle, 2nd version. I’ve since upgraded to a black Kindle 3, then to a Kindle keyboard, then to the first Kindle Fire, and finally to my Kindle Fire HD, which I’ve had for about six months. Luckily I found the ILMK Blog in my first week of my first Kindle.
I’m disabled and virtually house bound, and my Kindle is my window to the world outside. ILMK has opened my eyes to many features and tips I would never have found, greatly expanding the usability of my Kindle. I didn’t even know what “FLIPBOARD” or “PULSE” were for example, and both are fantastic – both are everyday musts.
Thanks to BUFO CALVIN for making this busted up old Viet Vam era vet’s Kindle experience so much more than a basic e-reader.

B&N-first I thought their letter was sneaky and underhanded. Then I thought someone at B&N should get a prize for creative writing and points off for accuracy. iguess their legal department wouldn’t let them use it in an ad to avoid the whole truth in advertising thing.

Well, it’s interesting. The rules for advertising, public figures, and other individuals are different. If this letter said “Jeff Bezos” instead of Amazon, I assume it would have been actionable. If Barnes & Noble had said,
“Jeff Bezos would threaten small businesses’ livelihood rather than comply with state law”
I think Bezos could successfully sue…if you oouldn’t prove that he isn’t complying with state law. However, that’s tricky and I don’t think it would be the right thing to do.
Amazon should not directly reference the letter, in my opinion.

Were the books on there before and then they disappeared?
Are you able to see the books on the Cloud tab on Books?
If they are there and they are gone, that’s happened to me. Amazon recommended I deregister and regegister it, and that worked…but I had to download my books again.
If they haven’t been there, it may not be registered to the correct account…

This is a new replacement Fire. My first Fire overheated during charging. With that Fire I didn’t know how (and still don’t) to put my music in the cloud. Is sideloading using my Kindle 3 (Keyboard) the way to go? The custom. rep @Amazon told me that without having all my tunes in the cloud (460plus) that they were just gone. That doesn’t sound like Amazon at all. Merry Christmas! by the way.

Okay, let’s take stock.
Amazon stores things for you digitally in the “Cloud” (also called your archives). If your music had been there and your first Kindle Fire died (sorry to hear that! I’m on my second, but it’s because my first one was scratched), then you wouldn’t have had a problem. You could have just downloaded them again.
When you sideload personal files on to a Kindle, Amazon doesn’t know about it.
MP3s, fortunately, aren’t tied to a specific device. You could copy them en masse to a computer, and from there to the Kindle Fire’s music folder.
In the future, a couple of possibilities:
I regularly back up my Kindles, precisely because I keep personal documents on them. I just copy them to a computer, and label the backup with the specific Kindle’s name. That way, I can put the files back on there that I want to do. That won’t work for Kindle store books, usually, but does work for a lot of other things.
Second, you can store up to 5 gigs in the Cloud for free…and any music you got from Amazon doesn’t count. 460 songs may seem like a prodigious amount, but it really isn’t. My guess is that you don’t have three gigs of storage with that..even if they all came from somewhere besides Amazon.
I have to say, though, it may be a lot easier to sideload that much music than to download it anyway. 🙂

You are my guru for everything Kindle, truly. And I agree with the seriously funny post!! Two further questions: 1: How do I I put music I buy from now on into the cloud upon purchase? 2: Why won’t the books either opened, in a collection or in my K3 3G archives transfer to my Kindle Fire. They don’t show up in the cloud. Even the ‘to be read’ collection won’t transfer.

Ah – I have a sync question. When I use a link from you, Stephen Windwalker, Andrey’s Hasten or ereaderiq.com and buy a book using my K 3 3G I can easily sync said book(s) to my Fire. However, if I buy a book on my Fire it doesn’t sync to my K 3. If the new book is on my K 3 3G I sync from my Fire. It just doesn’t work the other way around. I’m really gettin’ my aggravation quota made between my music that is ‘out there’s somewhere (bought & paid for), my K 3 books that are in archives but not in thee cloud and books that won’t sync. Help?

Actually, the Fire and the Kindle 3 (should) work pretty much the same way…they just look different.
When you buy a Kindle store book, the book goes into the archives (called “the Cloud”) on the Fire.
It’s available to each of the devices on the account.
On the Fire, it may look more like a book you bought and specified to be sent to the Kindle Keyboard (K3) is on the device…but it isn’t. That’s what the Carousel does to people’s perception of it, I think…since you see a nice looking cover, it seems like the book is there.
It isn’t on the Kindle Fire until you tap on it and download it.
The same thing is true of the Kindle Keyboard. The book you buy to be sent to the Fire should appear in the Archived Items list on the Keyboard. It isn’t actually on that device until you download.
Now, the one thing I can see as the difference is that my guess is that people tend to have the Fire connected to the internet, and tend to have the K3 not connected (that’s my case, anyway). You may have to sync both ends of the equation before it appears.
1. Order for Kindle A
2. Sync Kindle A
3. Sync Kindle B
You don’t always have to sync, but that should do it.
As to your other questions, I’m sorry that isn’t resolved yet. Have you spoken with Kindle Support again?

One big question in all of this…both Kindles are registered to the same account, right? They’d have to be to sync in either directions, but that would account for books not appearing in the Cloud on one device.

Amazon does a lot of interesting things with trade-ins. I think it may go like this:
1. Amazon pays you for it in store credit (tying you to Amazon)
2. Amazon sells it to another seller
3. The seller sells it through Amazon
4. Amazon takes a cut of the sale
I’m not sure that’s always the case, but it’s a good deal for Amazon.
