Which Kindle do you have?
This question comes up, and it can be important. For example, installing the wrong software update or using a keyboard shortcut intended for a different model can cause a problem.
Amazon provides two help pages:
- Which Kindle E-reader do I have? (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*)
- Which Fire Tablet do I have? (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*)
The definitive way to tell is with your serial number. You can find your serial number on the back of your device or by going to
Home-Menu-Settings-Device Info
If you don’t find it in one spot, try the other.
B001 = Kindle 1
B002 = Kindle 2 US
B003 = Kindle 2 International
B004 = Kinde DX US
B005 = Kindle DX International
B006 = Kindle 3 wi-fi and 3G
B008 = Kindle 3 wi-fi only
B009 = Kindle DX Graphite
B00A = Kindle 3 wi-fi and 3G for European customers
Kindle 3 with Special Offers (not known yet)
It’s possible B00A takes the place of B007 in the sequence.
In terms of how they look:
Kindle 1: has a “roller wheel” on the right-side that moves a silver square up and down a line
Kindle 2 (could be US or International…they look the same from the outside): has a “joystick” type controller in the bottom right corner as you face the screen
Kindle DX (could be US or International): larger screen (9.7″ versus 6″). Next and previous page buttons only on the right side as you face the screen
Kindle 3 (could be wi-fi only or wi-fi and 3G: also has a European variant): has a square with a ridge surrounding it in the bottom right corner as a directional device
Kindle 3 with Special Offers: should be like the Kindle 3 above, but with an ad on the bottom of the homescreen

it says
“If you have a software version prior to 2.5, you can download the latest Kindle software update, version 2.5.8, to your computer and transfer it to your Kindle via USB. ”
There are other numbered updates for other models, but they do not apply universally.
I just noticed you included your entire serial number…I am going to remove part of it for your security.

It should be fine…I think the issue is the optimization of the wireless connection. It should still work in the USA…it just might work better in Europe.
Yes, you can use it anywhere. If you are a US customer and you are using wireless, there is a weekly charge for receiving subscriptions. However, you can download using your computer and transfer using your USB cable, you can avoid that charge.

I am also having a love affair with my kindle. I just realized that my kindle is sadly out-of-date. I tried to update via the
amazon website. However, being “computer-illiterate” I was unable to do what I needed. So much of what I was reading went right over my head.

Most Kindles will update themselves automatically, but getting help can be a good idea.
I would honestly first consider contacting Kindle Support, even though that isn’t face-to-face. They can be very helpful and patient:

You’ll see a

button. You can have them call you…that’s the easiest way, I think.
Even though you are in Seattle, I don’t think Amazon does face-to-face help (although I know they are considering opening a retail store: I presume they would then).
I know it sounds funny, but a high school or college student could probably help you…if you know any, that’s an easy way to go.
You could try Best Buy: they sell Kindles, and their Geek Squad might help (but that might not be free).
I would assume a computer repair place could help you (for a fee). Here is one in Seattle:

It’s possible your public library might help…some of them do classes in EBRs (E-Book Readers).
I’d also just ask your friends…many Kindle owners have probably done it and could help.

I’m not quite sure what you are asking. All Kindles are sold by Amazon, although some are sold wholesale to stores which then sell them. I believe it may be made in Singapore, Taiwan, and/or China, depending on different parts, although I can’t know for sure.
Based on your firmware number, the model is a Kindle Paperwhite (second generation).

You need to add the changes in serial numbers for the 2014 version of hdx 8.9. You are listing only the 2013 version. Since there is no visible change and in spite of the graphics enhancements in the 2014 model the device info still lists the same, the serial number changes are the best way to tell which hdx 8.9 you have.

I’m sorry to hear that! It’s never fun to have service that doesn’t meet your expectations. Amazon consistently is top-rated for Customer Service, and I’ve always gotten great service from them…but no organization will satisfy everyone every time.

It’s not so much a case of needing, as wanting. While some tablets do some things better than a given Fire model, there are things that only the Fires can do that people want.
One of the biggest is probably Mayday. I’ve used it, and it’s a great leap forward in Customer Service. It’s live on-screen help…and the person is usually there in under thirty seconds. They can actually take over your device (with your permission, of course) to help you, or they can just show you how to do it…even “drawing on the screen”.
I think it’s particularly useful for people who are not as adept at technology, although for me, it was nice for them to see some diagnostics I couldn’t have seen easily.
The Fires aren’t going to be the best tablet for everybody, but especially for people who are already part of the Prime program, they can be the best choice for them. The model I use every day, the Kindle Fire HDX 7″, has a 4.3 out of 5 stars average with close to 16,000 customer reviews. Not every one of those people would say they “need” it: there are close to 1,000 one star reviews…but there are also close to 10,000 five star reviews.
Somebody who is already heavily into Apple would probably prefer an iPad. Somebody who is heavily into Amazon may prefer a Fire. I’d go with which ever one will make you happiest: happy is good for your health. 🙂

Yes, that should be a 2nd generation Kindle Fire.
Amazon’s own site has some false positives, but they say these are the cases for that model when you do a search:

You don’t want one that says it is for the HD or HDX…there were ones there that said they weren’t for those models, and those should be the ones.

I am putting together a Kindle guide myself and cannot find the serial number prefixes for the 2014 models anywhere. I have also seen some examples of different prefixes for the same models. Example: Kindle Fire HDX 8.9″ 16GB WiFi = 0018, but I have also seen it listed as B018 or D018. Do you know why the discrepancy?

I understand about the leisure time. 🙂 Once you become an Associate, it takes very little time to create a “referrer link” for something (say, a Kindle Voyage), and then you can re-use that link over and over on your site. If someone buys by clicking on that link (or if they buy something else after having gotten to Amazon by using your link…it’s a bit complicated), you get an “advertising fee”. Totally up to you, of course, if it’s available where you live. Just a way to support your reading and writing habits, by doing pretty much what you are doing now (outside of the linking).
Yes, Amazon has a site specifically for India which sells Kindles. Sometimes there are are regionalisms for the devices, though…not sure about India. I just don’t want your readers to have a problem by getting a device which may not be configured for where they live.

Correct me if I’m wrong on this…I think you are talking about the ability to “Customize to your language”. If so, all of those interfaces are on the Paperwhite which you would buy from Amazon.com for use in the USA…and you can switch whenever you want (it will even provide a “look up dictionary” in the appropriate language).
There have been different models in the past for the USA and international, but they don’t advertise them that way now. If you get a model with 3G, I believe that the “modem” might vary…

If it says “Amazon” on the back, it’s a 2nd generation. If it says, “Kindle” on the back, it’s a first generation.
The third generation is due to be released June 30th, although I believe there are a few pre-release units out there.

I’m sorry you’ve had trouble contacting Amazon! What have you tried?
Amazon consistently has one of the highest rated Customer Services, and that’s been my experience with them as well.
I will say, though, that I’m basing that on my Kindle experience with Amazon.com. I haven’t had to deal with them much on non-Kindle questions, and I haven’t dealt with the other Amazon sites (in other countries/market) almost at all.
If it is Amazon.com, and it’s Kindle related (I’m assuming it is, since you contacted me here), I generally start at
http://www.amazon.com/kindlesupport
You can use the
Contact Us
button there. I think it’s better to go through the site, because then they are already know who you are and what devices you have.
You can also get to help by clicking or tapping the Help link at the top of any Amazon page.
Once you get there, you can:
* call them
* have them call you (that’s what I usually do…my phone rings in seconds, and I’m speaking to someone within thirty seconds
* chat with them
* e-mail them
Again, I’d recommend calling…either you calling them or them calling you.
If you have some of the Fire devices, you also have the almost-instant onscreen help. I have it on both my Kindle Fire HDX and my Fire Phone. I think it’s one of the greatest Customer Service innovations in the past ten years.
If you are not in the USA, let me know from which Amazon site you got your device (or which country, if you got it in a store). I can look up the Help for you there.
If it doesn’t have to do with a Kindle, then use the Help link at the top of the Amazon pages.

One looks like the software has been updated to the current version, and the other looks older. The difference in the way the Home button and the menus look would match up with that.
I would suggest you check the software versions on the two devices.
Home – Menu – Settings – Menu – Device Info
I think that will be the same path on both.

If you connect to wireless with Amazon with that device, for example, to buy books or download books from your Cloud/Archives, it will eventually update on its own.
Updates generally have pluses and minuses. While you don’t like the menus, it’s possible the update is bringing you feature benefits.

Hi mr Bufo, thank you for your reply, my Kindle Fire was bought on amazon.it Back in 2013, it was a gift, it worked perfectly, the glass broke after 2 years for an accidental fall, i love that device because I have tons of books/documents in it and has a mini hdmi port… So, am trying to understand if it’s repairable, i think it’s a waste to leave it broken, though the customer service from amazon says they can’t do anything, it’s out of warranty.

Which device? Do you know what model you have? If the serial number does show on your device, I can probably tell you where.
It can be safer not to have the serial number showing on the device, but available through the menus. That makes ownership disputes easier to resolve. The owner can get into the menus or go online to Amazon.com to get the serial number, but someone who stole it or found it (assuming the device is password protected) can’t provide it in claiming ownership.

Hi, I have the B00E – Kindle 4 NoTouch Silver (2011),the software version is 4.0 (1308590058).Been trying to update following the instructions on the amazon help site but the “update your kindle” remains greyed out. Any suggestions? I tried using the: “Download 4.1.0 Source Code and Download 4.1.0 Legal and Open Source Notices”. Is this the correct version to use?

I have a Kindle 2 that won’t connect to WhisperNet so I’m unable to register it and download any content. I’ve updated the software to the latest – 2.5.8.
Model No – D00701
Serial number – B003BXXXXXXXX
Read through all the comments above and nothing seems to make a difference.
Tried the 311 at settings screen, which doesn’t do anything. 411 gives me some status screen, but since Whispernet won’t connect it looks like just a bunch of missing information. Tried restarting/rebooting.
Battery is quite old, but I don’t want to replace battery if its not usable. Powering via USB otherwise it will die quickly. I assume I should still be able to connect to 3G while connected via USB…
Any ideas?

The B003 is the International Kindle 2…I wonder if you might have one with a card intended for a different country (and carrier). That might cause the problem I think.

Evern though it is out of warranty they will usually still help, or perhaps you give a discount on a new model.
Just to be clear, hooking up your Kindle to your computer won’t give you 3G: what it will do is give you a way to transfer files to the Kindle which you have downloaded using your computer.

I have a kindle white paper that I was charging and now cannot get back to my home screen.
It reads. USB drive mode. If you want to read or shop your kindle while continuing to charge over USB keep cable attached but eject your kindle from your computer
I have been charging my kindle the same way since purchased

The USB drive mode suggests that it thinks is it connected to a computer. Try this: unplug it, then hold in the power button for a full ten seconds and then release. It may restart then. If it just powers off, wait thirty seconds, then try powering it on.
If that doesn’t work, plug it into a power outlet (not a computer), let it charge for an hour, unplug it, and then repeat the above.
Finally, it that doesn’t do it, contact Kindle Support:
