Flash! Two new free games for some Kindles
Thanks to a reader (I’m waiting for permission to identify), I’m sharing with you information about two new free wordgames you can download for your Kindle.
I’ve written about Kindle games before, in this previous post. As I explained in that post, Kindles all come with Minesweeper, and Kindles besides the Kindle 1 also have Gomoku. There are other games available as well.
This is new, though.
There are two word games, published by Amazon, available for free download to your Kindle. Well, not everybody’s Kindles. It’s kind of funny, but it says they are for “Kindle devices”. However, the only Kindle for which I can download on my account is our Kindle 2. Neither of our Kindle 1s show up, and our Kindle for PC reader app doesn’t show up either. If you have a K1, I guess you are out of luck on this one.
If you don’t, you can download these two games for free:
These are free word games!
As to the size of the files, they are in the range of a typical novel…between 800 and 1000 KB.
The reviews indicate that you don’t have to have the wireless connected to play: that’s nice. 🙂 I can’t download them right now to check (my reception isn’t good enough where I am right now, but I’ll try them later.
UPDATE: I moved out of one room and into another area (inside) a few meters away…zap, good service! As to the games…yowza! When I show them to my Significant Other, I may be forced to get a K3…so my SO can have the K2 and play these games. My SO is a big word game fan, and these would be great! It’s a good implemenation…they play well. I had some trouble reading part of the solution in one game…it would look better on a K3, I assume, because the problem was that the letters were too light to easily read the words I missed. I could read them, though.
Is this the start of the apps store? Maybe, this is how I would expect that to work. These are both published by Amazon Digital Services.
Some of you don’t want to play games on your Kindle…that’s fine, you don’t have to download them, of course. But those who enjoy that…free…word…games!

Both games are identified clearly in which Kindle models they’ll work on… the “enabled on these devices” (or similar wording) at the top of the page, when hovered over, shows exactly which models it will work on.
Someone else gave the games a one-star rating today because it wasn’t available on the K1, which is kind of silly. The K1 is a nice device and I feel for the owners of them, but when people give lousy reviews for something they’re unable to even use… well, that’s kind of killing the point of reviews. 🙂

Thanks for writing, Stephen!
Yes, I saw that one-star…I always figure it can’t be a review if you haven’t viewed it once yet. 😉

US only?
August 4, 2010 at 11:58 am |
Thanks for writing, Fred!
It’s certainly possible that this “active content” is limited to certain countries (similar to the way books are), even just the US. I think “exporting” software can fall into more complications than e-books. It’s possible the apps store will be limited to the USA as well…or that we’ll have seperate apps stores. I’ll see what my readers say about the games’ availability…

I appreciate the field report…sorry you can’t get them, although maybe you’ll be able to get them (or other similar things) later.

This is truly a great article, I personally run a game-related website that provides free game downloads to the public.
Thank you,
Jason

I’m glad you found it interesting…that one is really just a news flash, of course. I have another article which is more in-depth on Kindle games:

In the event you don’t thoughts my asking, do you make fine income from this webpage?
December 23, 2010 at 10:58 pm |
Thanks for writing, tabs!
Amazon limits what we can say about that publicly. Fine income? Taking everything into account about the blog, including referral fees for links and subscriptions, I would certainly be poverty level, if this was my only income. I get royalties from the books I’ve written, but even combining those two, I wouldn’t be out of the poverty level, I think. I have a full time job as well: I’m an educator. It does provide some extra money, tough.
