Freebie flash! Ten Lemony Snicket books!

Freebie flash!  Ten Lemony Snicket books!

Okay, this is bizarre (but great), and I don’t quite get it.

Amazon has a bunch of well-known books as freebies today.

That isn’t so odd…you would expect them to do something splashy to counter (or ride) the iPad publicity.

Here is what’s strange: the books aren’t free at Barnes & Noble.

Let’s take this one for example:

The End
A Series of Unfortunate Events #13
By Lemony Snicket
Published by HarperCollins

As Monk used to say (I miss Monk), “Here’s the thing.”

It says right on the Amazon product page that “This price was set by the publisher.”

Okay, so the publisher is giving it away.  Maybe they are doing that to drum up business for the iPad (because, you know, everybody is worried it isn’t going to sell enough today…just kidding).

We’ve seen things that indicate both Apple and Amazon have deals that it can’t be sold cheaper anywhere else than it is sold at their sites.

iBooks users, let me know…is it free at iBooks?

However, the same book costs $10.99 at Barnes & Noble!

The End at B&N

Did they not negotiate the same “no place cheaper” deal?  That would be a problem for them.

Here are some more freebies right now:

The Reptile Room
A Series of Unfortunate Events #2

The Wide Window
A Series of Unfortunate Events #3

The Miserable Mill
A Series of Unfortunate Events #4

The Austere Academy
A Series of Unfortunate Events #5

The Ersatz Elevator
A Series of Unfortunate Events #6

The Carnivorous Carnival
A Series of Unfortunate Events #9

The Slippery Slope
A Series of Unfortunate Events #10

The Grim Grotto
A Series of Unfortunate Events #11

The Penultimate Peril
A Series of Unfortunate Events #12

I’m going to send this out now, in case these are only free for a very short time.  Note that #1 is not free (and not listed in this post), and neither are #7 or #8.  Still, that’s 13 books (and these have been very popular) for about $27 (since the ones for sale are $8.99) apiece.

Snag ’em!

Thanks Bufo! I loved the movie when it came out and I think I remember reading these to my children many,—–many years ago. I’ll look forward to reading these anew!

Thanks for all the stats and other info Bufo.

Hopefully Amazon negotiated recompense for the Whispernet cost of “freebies” declared by the publisher. Otherwise I’d tend to take a paranoid view of special treatment for Amazon. I’m afraid I just don’t trust publishers right now.

      Thanks, lp!

Yes, I have to say…I was concerned about that as well. I assume (although I haven’t heard yet) that they are free at Apple as well. The books all seem to be HarperCollins so far. Amazon would pay for the 3G…Apple wouldn’t pay, because it is wi fi right now.

That would be a sneaky way to get at Amazon, but I’m not that conspiracy-minded. I don’t think the publisher would do that…but I am a trusting sort. 😉
