#WDYTWed: What do you think about Prime Day 2019?

In the almost ten years that I’ve been writing this blog (the first post was August 28, 2009), one of my favorite things has been interacting with the readers.

That used to happen a lot more. When I started out, I averaged 1,000 new words a day, but in more recent times, I just haven’t been able to do that. I’ve been trying to write more narratives again, but without that, the blog doesn’t tend to provoke many comments…and I miss that. I think my long time readers do, too.

One of those long time readers and amongst my most frequent commenters is Lady Galaxy, who recently suggested that I write something once a week with the intent of increasing interaction.

It’s a good idea. 🙂

I think the best way to do that is to do one or more polls (which I’ve done throughout the past decade).

I’ve decided to name this series #WDYTWed. WDYT is an internet abbreviation for “What Do You Think?”, and I’m going to do them on Wednesdays. Hopefully, every Wednesday, but we’ll see how that goes.

For this first one, I thought I’d ask you about

Amazon Prime Day (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*)

since it just happened Monday and Tuesday.

Feel free to include additional answers, or tell me and my readers what you think of this, by commenting on this post!

Let’s see how this goes. It did take about half an hour to do, but it should generally take less time to do a #WDYTWed in the future.

If you have ideas for future poll topics, please let me know!

Thanks, Lady Galaxy!

Day 1 of Prime Day…and we’ve already saved much more than we pay for the annual membership

Day 1 of Prime Day…and we’ve already saved much more than we pay for the annual membership

I recommended some strategies for

Amazon Prime Day (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*)

earlier today:

It’s Prime Day! Strategies…

We’re careful buyers (believe it or not), but I thought I’d give you some idea of what we’ve bought, and how much we saved.

First, and this is still available, we’d saved $95.96 before the official start of Prime Day (but as part of it) by renewing our Kindle Unlimited membership for another two years. You do that here:

Give the Gift of Kindle Unlimited (at AmazonSmile*)

Did we stop there?

Nope! 🙂

We’ve saved about $150 just today.

Our biggest savings was on the

Ring Spotlight Cam Battery HD Security Camera with Built Two-Way Talk and a Siren Alarm, White, Works with Alexa (at AmazonSmile*)

That is $60 off, $139.00 instead of $199.

I’ve been wanting one…we do have package theft in our area, and not everything can go to an Amazon Locker (we send everything there we can). This should be a deterrent…oh, and if the camera itself gets stolen, Amazon will replace it!

Lots of good features in this one. We bought an extra battery pack…one battery likely lasts for a few weeks (depending on settings), and it will automatically switch to the second one. That gives you a chance to charge one while the other is running. They sell a solar panel for it, but I don’t trust us to install it. We’re terrible at that “handy stuff”. A funny one recently: we had to put on a new doorknob. My first mistake was removing the doorknob while the door was closed…I couldn’t open it! Then, fortunately, my Significant Other noticed I was putting the doorknob on upside down…

We also bought the

Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote (at AmazonSmile*)

for $14.99, to have as an “emergency gift”. That saved us another $25.

I bought two wi-fi bulbs for $38.99 off…but they appear to be sold out.

Outside of that, it was clothes and household items, making up the rest.

I heard from other people I know that they bought two

Echo Show 5s (at AmazonSmile*s)

for $49.99 each…$40 off each!

I want to mention one more thing:

There is a

new version of the Kindle Oasis (at AmazonSmile*)

being released on July 24th…and the current version is significantly on sale:

current generation Kindle Oasis…apparently now available without an animal leather cover (at AmazonSmile*)

for $199.99, $80 off.

Prime Day has definitely been worth it for us!

How about you? Feel free to let me and my readers know about great bargains you’ve gotten by commenting on this post.

It’s Prime Day! Strategies…

July 15, 2019

It’s Prime Day! Strategies…

It’s here!

Today (and tomorrow) is

Amazon Prime Day (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*)

This is genuinely an opportunity to get some great deals! However, like a lot of things in this time of consumer plenty, it can be confusing.

You’ll see tons of deals, and it’s entirely possible that you’ll feel yourself shift into a sort of predator mode, that you have to strike NOW as the zebra darts out of the scrub across the savanna. Or, you know, you just think it’s cool 😉

I’m not going to stop you from that. We expect to buy some things today.

I’m also not going to try to point out flash deals to you all day long. The nature of Prime Day has changed in the four years since it launched. The first year, there were many deals which were only available for a very short time. We hovered over the Buy button, trying to hit it at exactly the right time before they ran out.

That’s not the case now. There will be lightning deals, and some of them will sell out, but now, it’s more a matter of making a deliberate choice. Many deals have already been available, and they will be available through both days (and some will undoubtedly continue afterwards).

UPDATE: We had on the Prime Day Channel in the Amazon shopping app on our Fire TV Cube, and they announced their first special deal (a “Deal Reveal”) for a 70″ Sony TV deal for about $800 (which I think was about half off)…and it appeared to sell out in under a minute. That’s not going to be the case with most things, especially Amazon products, but it did seem to be true with this…a quick sell out.

You can find them at

Amazon Prime Day (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*)

or even better, in the Amazon Shopping app. That’s just going to be easier and has more functionality to alert you to deals. You can also just ask Alexa.

What do you do when you see something you want? For example:

Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote (at AmazonSmile*)

It says it’s $14.99 instead of $39.99 (63% off). This is an excellent “emergency gift”. We always keep a few things around at the holidays, in case someone shows up we weren’t expecting (such as someone having a new Significant Other). If your recipient already has one, this can still be valuable. It would also be good for a company gift exchange

If it’s a Prime Day Deal (and you’ll see a “badge” on that), you’ll also likely see a countdown for when the deal ends (as I write this, the deal ends in about 43 and a half hours).

If you are just good with the price, and don’t care whether it’s a bargain or not, go for it.

If you want to see if it is actually a good deal, an especially low price, go to

https://camelcamelcamel.com/

You can either describe the item or put in the URL (the address up in the search bar). Note that there may be different versions shown if you put in words. Also, and this is important, their current price will probably be higher than the price you are seeing on Amazon…because that price at Amazon is exclusive for

Amazon Prime (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*)

You need to be a Prime member to get Prime Day deals…although you can get a free trial. The odds are if you trial Prime, you’ll stick with it. Not having Prime nowadays is like not having access to a car. You can deal without it, but it certainly makes things much more convenient!

So, it shows the current price for the Fire TV Stick above as $39.99. What’s important, though, is that it shows you the price history. In this case, it goes back to January 15th…and the lowest price it has been is $29.99, so this is a great deal!

You can set a price alert at CamelCamelCamel…locate a product, and then sign up to get an e-mail (yes, you’ll be giving them your e-mail for that…you don’t have to sign up for anything to use CamelCamelCamel) when that product drops to a price you set.

That’s the shopping part. 🙂

I do want to point out that there will be many scams around Prime Day. Beware of e-mails telling you that you need to click something because your product is out of stock, or they need a confirmation, or the price changed, or they couldn’t deliver something. If you get an e-mail, ideally, go directly to Amazon to check on it.

I may try to add more specific products throughout the course of the two days, but this is where my readers can help each other. Feel free to comment on this post with deals you see. If you can, give some idea about when it will expire.

Here’s Amazon’s press release listing some of the deals:

press release

Don’t forget to use Alexa to shop! Asking Alexa for deals can be very easy, as well as using the Amazon Shopping app on your Fire TV device (they have a live Prime Day “channel”) in the app.

Also, while Prime Day is not just in the USA, the offers will be different in different markets.

Happy shopping! Oh, and if you go to Amazon Smile, you can benefit a non-profit of your choice by doing so. I’d appreciate it if you use my link to start your shopping trip:

but if you want to help someone else by going from their link, (such as a non-profit), I understand. 🙂

Echo Auto: first impressions

July 14, 2019

Echo Auto: first impressions

We’ve had our

Echo Auto (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*)

for about a day, so I thought I’d give you my first impressions of it.

The initial thing that struck me was that it is small, sleek, and elegant. That hasn’t always been the case with Amazon hardware. The first gens of the Kindle and Echo Show were…well, perhaps charmingly quirky, but clunky.

Second, the initial set up was easy. I bought the

Echo Auto Air Vent Mount (at AmazonSmile*)

which really turned out to be unnecessary, but I can see having one for when you want to temporarily put your Echo Auto in another car, such as a rental. Otherwise, the included dash mount is fine.

The only thing that gave me pause during the set up was when I was adding the device through the Alexa app, and it was showing me types of devices. The category of device is “Echo”, then Echo Auto is a choice…I kind of expected to see Echo Auto first, but this makes sense.

Using it in the car by voice was fine. It heard us over the sound of music playing and road sound. The only weird thing is that the “ding” that tells you Alexa is listening comes some time after it is actually listening (the lightbar indicates that), at least on Bluetooth.

It did everything we asked it to do: play music, answer questions, check the weather, find vegetarian restaurants nearby (it has location services), remember something and tell it to us later.

When using it, we loved it!

The one negative was that, on the second day, the one where I was going to show it off to my SO and explain how to use it, it would just not connect. We were in a RAV4. I think it may have gotten confused because I had my phone, which usually defaults into the Bluetooth pairing. When I had tested it the day before, I only had my SO’s phone with me.

After that, I couldn’t get it to smoothly pair…so we are using the Aux jack instead of Bluetooth (they include a cable for that). That seems to be great, but we’ll test it more tomorrow.

So, our set up is: Echo Auto magnetically attaches to vent clip (my SO prefers the vent clip); there are two cables, one to the USB power port (they give you an adapter for the “cigarette lighter”) and one to the aux 3.5mm audio port.

Those two cables could have been considerably shorter for us: it does seem a bit untidy to have them hanging there, even though there is a cable guide on the vent clip.

Having the magnetic attachment works well: you could easily take the Echo Auto with you out of the car or put it in the glove compartment…might be tempting to thieves.

A few other points:

  • You need the phone in the car for it to work…and you need an internet connection (not surprisingly)
  • If someone did steal it, they wouldn’t have access to your account, because it wouldn’t be paired with your phone any more (I’m sure that’s true)
  • It’s available to request for Prime members for $24.99 right now…eventually, it will be open purchase for probably twice that

Overall, I like it!

If you’ve gotten one already (or have questions), I’d be curious to know what you think by commenting on this post!

Amazon Prime Day (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*)

starts Monday!

One tip: if you aren’t sure if something is really a deal or not, you can check the Amazon price history with

CamelCamelCamel

You can do it right on that site, or get a browser extension (including for Chrome).
