Limited time offer: $20 more on Kindle trade-ins

Limited time offer: $20 more on Kindle trade-ins

Many of us have older Kindle EBRs (E-Book Readers…not tablets) which we don’t use much, if at all. You might also be interested in one of the newer models, up to and including the Kindle Oasis (the current top of the line).

Amazon has had a trade-in program for some time (not really natively Amazon, but you can get to it through Amazon).

Some people have been disappointed in the amounts, but used electronics just typically don’t have much value. I used to teach QuickBooks, and when I was explaining depreciation, I would jokingly say that a computer depreciated 100% by the time you got it to the parking lot from the store. 😉

Right now, through the end of the year, Amazon has a special deal which gives you an additional $20 on your trade-in!

Kindle Trade-in @ Amazon.com (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*)

Looks like you can only do it once, but you can do it for up to five devices per account/person.

These are the ones you can get:

Interestingly, they use this to also promote the

Amazon Pop-Up Stores (at AmazonSmile*)

They list that page as “Amazon retail locations” and even though they are “pop-ups”, which suggests existence for a limited time, they certainly make it seem like they have a solid presence. They list five specific stores where you can trade in your Kindle (in five states) and go on to list more than thirty.

I think the trade-in is a nice deal, and that some people will take advantage of it, either in the pop-up stores or online…

Monthly Kindle Deals for $3.99 or less each: May 2016

May 2, 2016

Monthly Kindle Deals for $3.99 or less each: May 2016

Amazon does the Kindle Daily Deal (at AmazonSmile…benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*), which used to discount four books a day (often general fiction, a romance, a science fiction/fantasy book, and a kids’ book). Now, it seems like it is generally more books than that, and not categorized.

They also do Monthly Kindle Book Deals for $3.99 or less each (at AmazonSmile). There used to be about 100 of them, but there are many times that now: 299 at the time of writing…19 fewer than last month (which makes about 40 fewer than two months ago). They are up to 85% off…but in a return to form (and continuing the last two months’ trend), none of them are more than the normal $3.99 top limit.

Those prices only apply to the USA, and one weird thing is that some of the books seem to sell out at that price sometimes (or become unavailable for some other reason).

Another thing is that 108 of them (7 fewer than last month) are available through

Kindle Unlimited (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*)

Amazon lists that information prominently…and it’s now commonly a filter in search results. If they are, then you need to consider whether it is worth buying them…even at these low prices. While they are in KU, you can, if you are a subscriber (and there’s a free month available right now), read them at no additional cost. There are, of course, advantages to owning books, especially if you want to re-read them. A book could move out of KU at any time. Even if you think you want to own it, if you are a KU member, you could always read it first to make sure. 😉 I will mark them with KU.

By the way, in the new version of the

eReaderIQ advanced search

you can make KU a filter. So, you can search for books by an author, a keyword, an average customer review which you can read as part of your KU membership…nice! I’m not associated with eReaderIQ except as a user (we have had some correspondence), but I do think it is the most valuable website for Kindleers.

I’m going to list some of the books in this sale that caught my eye…I’m not necessarily recommending them, but I do think they are interesting.

The ones I link (if I actually link to specific books) also don’t block text-to-speech access**…but I think blocking it is becoming rarer.

If there were others you’d like to mention for me and my readers, please comment on this post.

Prime members, don’t forget to pick up your

Kindle First books (at AmazonSmile*)

You can get one of the six (same as last month…previously, it had been four) books to own (not borrow) for free…these are books which will be actually released next month. The choices this month are:

  • The Butterfly Garden by Dot Hutchison (thriller)
  • A House for Happy Mothers by Amulya Malladi (contemporary fiction)
  • Enemy (On the Bones of Gods Book 1)  by K. Eason (fantasy)
  • Time Heals No Wounds (A Baltic Sea Crime Novel) by Hendrik Falkenberg, Patrick F. Brown (translator) (mystery)
  • We’re All Damaged by Matthew Norman (modern fiction)
  • About the Night by Anat Talshir, Evan Fallenberg (translator) (literary fiction)

People like to know which one I pick…nothing grabbed me right off. I’ve read some great translations in my life, but so far, none of the translations I’ve read through Kindle First would fall into that category. Since these books are all published by Amazon’s traditional publishing, there is probably at least a shared philosophy on translations. I wasn’t sure what the difference was between “modern fiction” and “contemporary fiction”. My normal default, when I’m not enthused, is to go with the science fiction/fantasy choice. My first glance showed the three star average review, which did (emotionally) put me off. Looking at it, though, that’s only one review…and the first line is complimentary. 🙂 However, the review did mention extensive use of italics, and since I tend to listen to a lot of a book in the car using text-to-speech, I might lose some context. Ultimately, I went with A House for Happy Mothers…it sounds like it may humanize an interesting situation in the world. I work with OB/GYNs a lot, and how people process reproduction emotionally and intellectually intrigues me.

Enjoy!

I do buy from AmazonSmile, but I have a lot of stored links I use to check for things.

** A Kindle with text-to-speech can read any text downloaded to it…unless that access is blocked by the publisher inserting code into the file to prevent it. That’s why you can have the device read personal documents to you (I’ve done that). I believe that this sort of access blocking disproportionately disadvantages the disabled, although I also believe it is legal (provided that there is at least one accessible version of each e-book available, however, that one can require a certification of disability). For that reason, I don’t deliberately link to books which block TTS access here (although it may happen accidentally, particularly if the access is blocked after I’ve linked it). I do believe this is a personal decision, and there  are legitimate arguments for purchasing those books.

Heads up! Limited Time Offer on Fire tablets through 8 PM Pacific: Angry Birds Star Wars AT-AT Playset

November 12, 2015

Heads up! Limited Time Offer on Fire tablets through 8 PM Pacific: Angry Birds Star Wars AT-AT Playset

There is a limited offer available right now (for owners of Fire tablets with Special Offers) for a physical playset (not an app) of Angry Birds Star Wars AT-AT Attack Battle Game. I called it a “playset” in the headline because it fit better. 🙂 It’s $16.99…60% off the list price, although Amazon usually sells it for $22.27, which is 47% off. It’s 4.1 star out of 5, with 155 customer reviews.

These are special limited time offers, which are only available to Fire tablet owners.

What happens is you can get a text to alert you to an upcoming deal (details in the links below). You don’t get much warning…maybe an hour.

The deal also appears on the sleep screen of your Fire, and you can find it under Offers on the homescreen (all the way at the end). That will disappear when the sale is over.

Then, you say you want to “learn more”. You’ll get to a screen with a countdown clock. As soon as the clock gets to zero, you need to click to have a chance to get it.

They have typically been selling out in seconds, although this one looks like it will last the hour.

Here is information on the program:

As I’ve written before, I look at these LTOs (Limited Time Offers) sort of like buying a lottery ticket: I don’t expect to get one (win), but its exciting if I do! Of course, the “ticket” doesn’t cost me anything.

These LTOs are one of the best arguments for having Special Offers…and yes, a good argument for having a  Fire (at AmazonSmile)!

Did you get one? Do you have any other comment on this? Feel free to let me and my readers know by commenting on this post.

One more thing: I’ve had a couple of readers say on past offers that they never even saw the offer. As far as I know, these go out to every eligible Fire tablet in the USA. A few possibilities occur to me:

  • They either bought a Fire tablet without Special Offers, or bought out of the offers later. You have to be subscribed to those in order to get these deals
  • They weren’t connected to wireless in time for it to update
  • They didn’t check the Offers tab (I don’t always see it on the sleep screen)

It might not have been any of those, but those three would have done it.

Limited time offer on Fire tablets: Things We Set on Fire $1 .99

September 17, 2015

Limited time offer on Fire tablets: Things We Set on Fire $1 .99

If you have a Fire tablet, with special offers, check it for this one. It’s big savings on a popular book.

Sorry this is so short, I am just on my phone. 🙂

Update:

These are special limited time offers, which are only available to Fire tablet owners.

What happens is you can get a text to alert you to an upcoming deal (details in the links below). You don’t get much warning…maybe an hour.

This time, also, I think someone was saying I hadn’t included a link.

I don’t think I can…I think you have to go directly from you Fire tablet. I know I didn’t see it when I went to the book in the browser.

Although the sale is over, this was the item:

Things We Set on Fire (at AmazonSmile*) by Deborah Reed | 4.1 stars | 1,269 customer reviews

It’s $4.99 right now to buy, and it’s also available as part o

Kindle Unlimited (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*)

I have to say, it was nice to see a book as one of these LTOs. 🙂

More later, because I am on my phone right now. I did not want people to miss the opportunity to get this. This only applies to people who have a Kindle Fire with special offers.

I believe that this is a clip light for your non-fire Kindle that is normally $15.

Update:

These are special limited time offers, which are only available to Kindle Fire owners.

What happens is you can get a text to alert you to an upcoming deal (details in the links below). You don’t get much warning…maybe an hour (about half an hour in this case).

The deal also appears on the sleep screen of your Fire, and you can find it under Offers on the homescreen (all the way at the end).

Then, you say you want to “learn more”. You’ll get to a screen with a countdown clock. As soon as the clock gets to zero, you need to click to have a chance to get it.

They have typically been selling out in seconds.

As far as I know, these go out to every eligible Kindle Fire in the USA. A few possibilities occur to me:

  • They either bought a Kindle Fire without Special Offers, or bought out of the offers later. You have to be subscribed to those in order to get these deals
  • They weren’t connected to wireless in time for it to update
  • They didn’t check the Offers tab (I don’t always see it on the sleep screen)

It might not have been any of those, but those three would have done it.

The one thing for you that is different is that you pick a non-profit the first time you go (which you can change whenever you want)…and the good feeling you’ll get. :) Shop ’til you help! :)
