Today’s KDD: another Kindle Daily Mega-Deal…$1.99 each for top-rated books

Today’s KDD: another Kindle Daily Mega-Deal…$1.99 each for top-rated books

Part of my morning routine is to look at the

Kindle Daily Deal (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*)

It’s one of many ways that Amazon saves us money on e-books (I listed 10 ways Amazon saves us money on e-books a couple of years ago).

I do that in the Maxthon browser (my preferred browser) on my

Kindle Fire HDX (at AmazonSmile)

As a

Kindle Unlimited (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*)

member, it’s quite unlikely that I’ll buy one when I see it…even at $1.99 or a huge discount (or both).

Why do I look?

Part of it is for you. I want to alert you to great deals…I think it’s one of the things I can do with this blog that helps people.

The other thing is for gifts…both for me to give a gift to someone else (you can delay delivery until the appropriate occasion) and for me (by adding books to Amazon Wish List so friends and family can get the oy of buying me books). 🙂

When I see that there are several books at the top instead of just one, that’s exciting! It sometimes indicate a broad range sale of fifty or so titles.

That was the case recently with books by guests of The Daily Show…and it’s true today for “Top-Rated Reads: Novels, Nonfiction, and More”.

My guess is that the TDS thing was sort of spur of the moment, and this one was already planned.

I’m impressed with today’s list! Titles (and there are 73) include:

Round up #303: Bezos sells half a bill, Braille SmartWatch

Round up #303:  Bezos sells half a bill, Braille SmartWatch

The ILMK Round ups are short pieces which may or may not be expanded later.

Braille SmartWatch to read e-books

What an astonishing advancement!

While text-to-speech is certainly very valuable for the print disabled, and a relatively small percentage of that group read Braille, I’m really amazed by the

dot Braille SmartWatch

It will reportedly cost under $300…and allow Braille readers to read e-books silently on their wrists!

I’ve asked them if it will reach text format e-books…it does read texts, so that’s possible. Even if it requires Braille prepared books, I still think this is great. 🙂

Thanks to Engadget for the heads up on this story!

Boooooooks  change braaaaaaaains!

We all intuitively feel that books change brains for the positive. I think most of think that it is especially true of children getting early exposure to books.

Well, it’s nice when science backs up those intuitions. 🙂

In this

THINKPROGRESS post by Sam P.K. Collins

they reference a study from Cincinnati’s Children Hospital showing, through the use of fMRIs (Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging, that children with more literature friendly homes actually have higher brain function. The article talks about some efforts in the area of trying to increase early childhood exposure to reading.

According to this

Bloomerg Business article by Spencer Soper

Jeff Bezos, CEO (Chief Executive Officer) of Amazon has sold about $500 million in shares of the e-tailer.

Don’t worry, though…Jeff Bezos does that from time to time. 🙂

Today’s KDD: up to 80% off books by guests of The Daily Show

August 8, 2015

Today’s KDD: up to 80% off books by guests of The Daily Show

Hopefully, you’ll see this soon enough to take advantage of one of today’s

Kindle Daily Deals (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*)

This is a clever one.

Jon Stewart has left The Daily Show.

A lot will be said about Stewart’s tenure, but the comedian/host was undeniably important to authors and publishers.

I’ve read repeatedly that Stewart actually read all the books that appeared on the show. In Entertainment Weekly, there was a telling recollection from Rob Corddry: “I caught him reading a book once, and and he was literally turning a page every five to 10 seconds. He was almost embarrassed to be caught.”

I think a lot of us have had that experience…feeling sort of ashamed to be caught reading. That’s a bad thing, and maybe that only happens in school. Hopefully, not as much as it used to happen. E-books can help with that: you can be a stealth reader. You know, they might think you are doing something cool, like playing Candy Crush. 😉

Amazon is commemorating Jon Stewart’s stay by giving up to 80% off on 52 books by guests of the show.

Please check the price before you click or tap that Buy button! I’m getting this out relatively late in the day, and it may not apply in your country (I have readers all over the world). Of course, even if you don’t see them in time for the discount, there are many books here which would be good to read regardless. 😉

Remember that you can buy these as a gift now, and delay the delivery until the appropriate gift giving occasion.

Refund a Watchman

August 7, 2015

Refund a Watchman

No question…the publication of

Go Set a Watchman (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*)

has been complicated for fans (and they are legion) of

To Kill a Mockingbird (at AmazonSmile)

I’ve started re-reading TKaM, and I’ll follow that with Watchman.

I did have to think about that order a bit.

Watchman was written first…but takes place afterwards, as I understand it.

I’d rather have the (refreshed) experience of TKaM first.

I expect to think Watchman is not as good of a book, although I’m open to it being one.

I won’t be disappointed if I think that it was the right decision to rewrite it…which turned it into TKaM.

One bookstore recently offered customers refunds, saying that it wasn’t what their customers thought it was.

Well, Amazon always offers a return within seven days of purchase for Kindle books, so that’s not a big deal. 😉 I see a lot of people chastising people for returning a Kindle store book simply because they didn’t like it…but Amazon doesn’t say that’s not an okay reason. If you return too many things, they do make it a bit more difficult…you can’t return books yourself any more through

http://www.amazon.com/myk

you have to contact Kindle Support.

If you abuse return policies generally at Amazon,  they do have the right to terminate your account…that’s going to be a very rare thing, though.

Entertainment Weekly (which I’ve read every week for many years) checked with independent bookstores, according to this

article by Christian Holub

Their take is that readers are generally not asking for refunds.

I considered polling you, my readers, to see how you felt about the book…but I’m guessing that not many people have finished it yet.

So,  I’ll just ask:  if you have read Go Set a  Watchman, was it worth the price? If you haven’t read it, is your expectation that GSaW is as good as TKaM? A good novel generally? Is the insight that it gives into TKaM a justifiable reason to buy it and read it? Are you going to skip it because you are worried about it tainting your memories of TKaM? Feel free to tell me and my readers what you think by commenting on this post.

Amazon has restricted Prime sharing

August 6, 2015

Amazon has restricted Prime sharing

Well!

This is significant.

In the past, you could share Prime shipping benefits with four adults not on your account. I described it this way in 2014:

“You can share Prime shipping benefits with other people living at your same address. So, if you have, let’s say, an adult kid living with you with their own Amazon account, they can share your shipping benefit at no additional cost. You can have four additional people (not on your account…everybody on your account gets it automatically) under your shipping benefits.”
What can you do with Amazon Prime?

That’s not the case any more.

According to the

Amazon help page: Share Your Amazon Prime Benefits (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit by shopping*)

you can now only share shipping with one other adult not on your account…and that’s by forming an “Amazon Household”.

You do get to share some things besides shipping:

  • “The following Prime benefits can be shared in an Amazon Household: shipping benefits, Prime Instant Video (streaming only), Kindle Owners’ Lending Library, Prime Early Access, and Prime Exclusive Deals.”

For more information about Amazon Households, see this:

Amazon Help Page: About Amazon Households (at AmazonSmile*)

One of the things is that you have to agree to share payment methods…if Pat forms a household with Kris, Kris can use Pat’s credit/debit cards (which are on Pat’s Amazon account)  to make Amazon purchases on Kris’ account.

The Kindle Owners’  Lending Library is borrowing up to one book a calendar month…that’s the one new Kindle specific benefit.

All of this only matters if you want to maintain separate Amazon accounts.

That, to me, is generally the simple solution…be on the same account.

If two people are on the same account, they can freely share Kindle books…no limitations (except for how many devices can have that book at the same time…it’s usually six). They both have the shipping benefits. There are limitations as to how many devices can stream a video at the same time, but they both have access to the videos.

The disadvantage of being on the same account?

Well, again, you are sharing payment methods…but not everybody needs to know the information. I’ve written quite a bit about “Kindle Klubs”. There are what I call “Managers”, who have the sign-in credentials and do things at

http://www.amazon.com/myk

There are also “Users” who don’t have the information.

That can work very well: although it’s hard to hide gifts you buy from someone on the account. 🙂

Is this a reduction in benefits?

Yes, I think that’s fair to say.

There is some compensation in new sharing options…but certainly, some people who have been sharing Prime shipping benefits will feel a loss.

I don’t think it will hurt Amazon…I don’t think very many people have Prime just to share the shipping benefits.

Some people will now get their own Prime accounts who didn’t have them…which ultimately helps Amazon. Now that you can

Give someone Prime (at AmazonSmile*)

I think Amazon will see that happen quite a bit more with this, with someone who has more money in the family buying Prime for someone who doesn’t.

Again, I would look at having people on the same account…even if there are also additional accounts for  private purchases. There is no limit as to the number of people who can be on an account, but you can not do it for commercial purposes.

One more thing: it looks like current accounts will maintain the old rules…until they come up for renewal.

If you paid for Prime planning to share it the shipping benefits with four people, you will still get that for which you paid. It’s just that the next time you would pay (if you chose to do that), the rules would be different and you would re-evaluate the choice.

I think, though, that most people would renew.

What do you think? Does this impact your feelings about Prime membership? Have you been sharing your shipping benefits with more than one other adult not on your account? Is this part of Amazon phase two? Is there a reason that you don’t have loved ones on your account, but that they have their own separate account? Feel free to tell me and my readers what you think by commenting on this post.

Amazon’s Cloud Reader

August 5, 2015

Amazon’s Cloud Reader

You don’t need a Kindle to read Kindle books.

There are actually a lot of options available, but in this post,  I want to focus on one in particular: Amazon’s “Cloud Reader”.

You do need an Amazon account, but then you go to:

https://read.amazon.com/

and sign in.

At that point, the books you’ve purchased on your account are available to you.

Yep, just in a browser…you don’t need to install software or download an app.

I’m looking at mine right now in Maxthon (my browser of choice) on a computer running Windows 10.

I’ve never been impressed with the speed of performance, but it’s certainly serviceable once it syncs.

It will start out on “Cloud”, showing you the books in that account.

You can sort three ways: by Recent (the default), Author, or Title.

Click or tap the book you want to read, and it will download (you can start reading it before it’s complete).

My position was appropriately synced. I just tested it (to see what changes might have happened since the last time I used the app) with

The Martian (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*)

which I had finished…it opened at the end of the book, as it should.

There chevrons (arrows without the stick: <>) to go forwards or backwards in the book.

Move your mouse to the top of the “page”, and you should see a set of additional icons.

  • Library (this takes you back to the home page)
  • Go to Menu (looks like a book): you can go to the Cover, the Table of Contents, Beginning, Page…, or Location…
  • Aa gives you “display options”: you can choose between five font sizes (not as many as a Kindle, bu quite a few); five margin settings; three color modes (including white text on a black background…that can be easier for people with certain vision issues, and can be easier to read in a darkened setting); one column only (the default is to show you two “pages”, like a book); Show Reading Location (that defaults to on)
  • Toggle bookmark (to add or remove a bookmark to this location)
  • Show Notes and Marks
  • Synchronize
  • A searchbox

At the bottom of the page you’ll see a location slider.

Double click a word, and you’ll get the definition (and you can choose between dictionaries), the ability to add a note, and the ability to highlight.

Going back to the library, there is a setting gear,  but not a lot of choices:

  • Help
  • Terms of Use
  • Legal Notices
  • Privacy
  • Contact Us
  • Sign Out

There is a searchbox here…that’s  for finding items in the library, the other one is for within the book.

You can also choose between cover view and list view (although the list also shows covers), and change the size of the covers.

Finally, there is a link to the Kindle store.

I often send books I buy first to the Cloud Reader, if I don’t want it on any of our devices at that point.

So, simply, this is a good way to read when you want to do that on a computer. It’s not super sophisticated. It’s not the pleasant or convenient reading experience of a Kindle EBR (E-Book Reader) or even a Fire tablet.

Not bad for free, though. 🙂

Amazon’s “Start a New Series” page

August 4, 2015

Amazon’s “Start a New Series” page

Series are special.

Book series preceded radio and movie series, which preceded TV series…but they are still going strong.

Certainly, there are series I have loved. I especially like finishing  series. 🙂

I know, I know…I should be disappointed when that happens…the end of a great relationship.

However, I also like the idea that I’ve finished something…that I’ve read all there is to read.

Of course, nowadays, you can never know that there won’t be more. 🙂

That’s true even if the author is deceased.

After all, we have

Kindle Worlds (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*)

That’s Amazon’s new(ish) spin on fanfic (fan fiction), although it isn’t really that. A rightsholder licenses a property to Kindle Worlds. Following a few guidelines, anybody can write in that world…they don’t need permission outside of it being in Kindle Worlds.

The rightsholder, the author, and Amazon all get a cut of the sale.

So, even though Kurt Vonnegut died before the first Kindle was released (it was the same year), new books in “The World of Kurt Vonnegut”: 51 at time of writing.

I read  all 181 of the original Doc Savage adventures…but more authorized titles are being published.

As it did with some other things (crossovers, for one), I give credit to the (Wizard of) Oz series for pioneering the continuation of a popular series of books with other authors.

The Oz books were the Harry Potter series of their day (the first one was published in 1900). People would be lined up outside the bookstore to buy the new one, and there were Oz clubs.

After L. Frank Baum died in 1919, one more Baum Oz book was published. Then, in 1921, the same publisher brought out the next book in the series…written by another author, Ruth Plumly Thompson. Thompson would actually go on to write more books than Baum had.

Interestingly, Thompson was not at all trying to imitate Baum’s style, from what I could see. It was certainly the same world with the same characters, but the writing was different.

That’s one of the benefits of the thorough world building that Baum had done. We literally had a map of Oz (and surrounding lands), and the rules were carefully delineated (after the first book).

For example, nobody ages in Oz…and that happened all at once to a “normal” land. Yes, that means that some people would be babies forever…which Baum addresses in The Tin Woodman of Oz.

Thompson takes that existing world, and tweaks it…essentially, people can age if they chose to do so.

As you can tell…I love the intertwined complexity of a book series. 🙂

What happens when you want to start a new series?

Amazon has a page just for that:

Start a New Series (at AmazonSmile*)

Limiting it down to

Start a New Series (Kindle) (at AmazonSmile*)

we see these numbers for the categories:

  • Arts & Photography (1)
  • Biographies & Memoirs (4)
  • Children’s Books (6)
  • Christian Books & Bibles (32)
  • Comics & Graphic Novels (47)
  • Crafts, Hobbies & Home (1)
  • Engineering & Transportation (1)
  • Gay & Lesbian (2)
  • History (6)
  • Humor & Entertainment (1)
  • Literature & Fiction (229)
  • Mystery, Thriller & Suspense (112)
  • Parenting & Relationships (1)
  • Politics & Social Sciences (3)
  • Reference & Test Preparation (3)
  • Religion & Spirituality (35)
  • Romance (103)
  • Science Fiction & Fantasy (97)
  • Teen & Young Adult (14)

As might be  expected, Romance, Mystery, and Science Fiction/Fantasy dominate. I think that’s what most people think of when they think of fiction series.

Note that the numbers above clearly include non-fiction (hm…I would have thought there would have been a lot for travel)…and that the same series might appear in more than one category.

What are the ten most reviewed series in this set?

  1. The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown (I’ve read one)
  2. The Name of the Wind: The Kingkiller Chronicle: Day One by Patrick Rothfuss (haven’t read one)
  3. Wicked: Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West (Wicked Years Book 1) by Gregory Maguire (I’ve read one…I would read more, although the series tries to make it seem like it is based on the public domain Oz books and not on the 1939 movie, but the wicked witch being green is an important plot element. That’s from the movie, not the books ((the movie was playing with colors, since it was an early color film)))
  4. Dune by Frank Herbert (read several of these)
  5. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sing by Maya Angelou and Oprah Winfrey (haven’t read)
  6. Patriots: Surviving the Coming Collapse by James Rawles (haven’t read)
  7. Dark Lover (Black Dagger Brotherhood, Book 1) by J.R. Ward (haven’t read)
  8. Storm Front (The Dresden Files, Book 1) by Jim Butcher (I’ve read  the first one, and would certainly read more. I also watch the TV series)
  9. Dead Until Dark: A Sookie Stackhouse Novel by Charlaine Harris (huh…although I own some in paper, I realize I haven’t read this. I have seen the first season of True Blood)
  10. Foundation by Isaac Asimov (I’ve read the original trilogy)

One last though: I’m now a bit more reluctant to start a series (and I always want to read them in order). I have come to prize reading a variety of books…and for that reason, I’d say, committing to a series is less attractive.

What do you think? Do you like series? Do you prefer them? Are you a completist? Will you read a series out of order? Feel free to tell me and my readers what you think by commenting on this post.

The one thing for you that is different is that you pick a non-profit the first time you go (which you can change whenever you want)…and the good feeling you’ll get. :) Shop ’til you help! :)

Monthly Kindle Deals for $3.99 or less each: August 2015

August 2, 2015

Monthly Kindle Deals for $3.99 or less each: August 2015

Amazon does the Kindle Daily Deal (at AmazonSmile…benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*), which discounts (usually) four books a day (often general fiction, a romance, a science fiction/fantasy book, and a kids’ book).

They’ve also been doing Monthly Kindle Book Deals for $3.99 or less each) (at AmazonSmile). That’s a rebranding: they used to say it was “100 Books”, but that’s also gotten to be more…there are 291 for this month at the time of writing (fifteen fewer than last month…).

Those prices only apply to the USA, and one weird thing is that some of the books seem to sell out at that price sometimes (or become unavailable for some other reason).

It’s also interesting…about 50% of the books in the USA Kindle store are $3.99 or less (1,869,098 of 3,715,922). Still, these are on sale, and that’s worth something. :)

Another thing is that many of these books may be part of

Kindle Unlimited (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*)

Amazon lists that information prominently. If they are, then you need to consider whether it is worth buying them…even at these low prices. While they are in KU, you can, if you are a subscriber (and there’s a free month available right now), read them at no additional cost. There are, of course, advantages to owning books, especially if you want to re-read them. A book could move out of KU at any time. Even if you think you want to own it, if you are a KU member, you could always read it first to make sure. 😉 I will mark them with KU.

Oh, interesting! I see they are now also clearly marking when a book is available through the KOLL (Kindle Owners’ Lending Library)! That’s nice…there was a period of time when it was quite hard to tell. Eligible Prime members can borrow one per calendar month. If you are both a Prime member and a Kindle Unlimited subscriber (like me), I think you are more likely to get them through KU (where you can have up to ten at a time out, with no limit per month), but I’m sure I have many readers who are Prime members and don’t subscribe to KU. I’ll mark those with KOLL.

I’m going to list some of the $3.99 or lower ones that caught my eye…I’m not necessarily recommending them, but I do think they are interesting.

The ones I link (if I actually link to specific books) also don’t block text-to-speech access**…but I think blocking it is becoming rarer.

I think there  are some great choices here! I’ve also added a few things to my KU Wish List. 🙂

If there were others you’d like to mention for me and my readers, please comment on this post.

Prime members, don’t forget to pick up your

Kindle First books (at AmazonSmile*)

You can get one of the six (it’s only been four before) books to own (not borrow) for free…these are books which will be actually released next month. The choices this month are:

  • The Girl from Krakow by Alex Rosenberg (historical fiction)
  • The Good Neighbor by A.J. Banner (psychological suspense)
  • About That Fling by Tawna Fenske (romance)
  • City of Echoes (Detective Matt Jones Book 1) by Robert Ellis (mystery)
  • Young Babylon by Lu Nei, Poppy Toland (modern fiction)
  • The Hundred-Year Flood by Matthew Salesses (literary fiction)

People like to know which one I pick…I’m going with The Hundred-Year Flood. When science fiction and fantasy tend to draw my eye first, literary fiction always gets a serious consideration from me. I do look at the customer reviews, and if the only thing presented as a negative is something I think I would actually find appealing, which is the case here, that’s actually a big selling point for me. 🙂

Enjoy!

I do buy from AmazonSmile, but I have a lot of stored links I use to check for things.

** A Kindle with text-to-speech can read any text downloaded to it…unless that access is blocked by the publisher inserting code into the file to prevent it. That’s why you can have the device read personal documents to you (I’ve done that). I believe that this sort of access blocking disproportionately disadvantages the disabled, although I also believe it is legal (provided that there is at least one accessible version of each e-book available, however, that one can require a certification of disability). For that reason, I don’t deliberately link to books which block TTS access here (although it may happen accidentally, particularly if the access is blocked after I’ve linked it). I do believe this is a personal decision, and there  are legitimate arguments for purchasing those books.

Snapshot: August 1 2015

I generally run this information through eReaderIQ.com (it’s just easier than Amazon), and there are some vagaries in the searches (both there and on Amazon). I do try to run it the same way every time, so unless Amazon changes something, it should give you a pretty good idea.  NOTE: I’ve changed this explanation from saying “Jungle-Search.com” to “eReaderIQ.com”. It’s the same people and I assume the results are the same. eReaderIQ is just for the Kindle, Jungle-Search does Amazon generally. eReaderIQ has a slightly better interface for the searches.

* There was also an enhanced audio/visual version of this book for $16.99. I chose to enter it here only in the standard version, since that most closely represents the comparison between paper and e-book versions. It isn’t necessary to pay $16.99: it’s an additional payment for more features

Summary

Nice! Prices are broadly down! The percentage of books from one penny to $50 that are under $10 is noticeably bigger, and the New York Times bestseller hardback fiction equivalents were also down on average. There were more free books, both to borrow (the KOLL…Kindle Owners’ Lending Library and Kindle Unlimited) and own. Maybe prices are stabilizing after the return of the Agency Model? I’ll keep watching. 🙂

Older data were drawn using http://www.jungle-search.com, newer data with http://www.ereaderiq.com (from the same people). There are a number of possible sources of errors (eRi, Amazon, me), but these are probably pretty good.

  • The free books referenced here are from the Kindle store: there are many other sources for free books
  • My search for textbooks definitely has false positives (books that aren’t really textbooks). I search for -domain (to eliminate public domain titles, which would be older books, generally) textbook. That would find a book about textbooks, for example
  • I searched for “Spanish edition” to find Spanish language books. That has some false positives as well
  • I look at price percentages of books in the range of one penny to fifty dollars, to eliminate freebies and limit textbooks
  • The price point analysis is for books at that specific price: it does not represent a range of prices
  • I compared the percentage of price points in the Price Point Analysis when I showed the difference…not the number of books
  • This information is based on what a United States customer sees

Forgot your Kindle Passcode? Here’s what you can do

Forgot your Kindle Passcode? Here’s what you can do

Eventually, we won’t have to use passwords/passcodes/passphrases.

Microsoft is promising that now with Windows 10 (I’m still waiting for my computer to update to it, but it should happen soon).

My Lenovo decided (on its own) to start using facial recognition to log me into the laptop. I’m not creeped out by facial recognition generally, but it should have asked me first, I think. 🙂

It’s certainly imperfect. Very often, it’s too dark for it to recognize me. I’ve mentioned before that I have superior night vision (I think that may be connected to my color vision deficiency). It may be that I just tend to keep the room unusually dark, but it’s still inconvenient. I can go back to entering a passcode, but I have to cancel the FR first.

That said, though, existing Kindle EBRs  (E-Book Readers) don’t have the capability for that. They also can’t hear you, so recognition by voice isn’t going to happen either. I doubt they have sophisticated enough position recognition to let you wave them around in a pattern to log in (which is another option).

So, the option at this point is to enter a passcode.

I should explain one thing: a password consists of just letters. A passcode can have letters and numbers. Most people just use “password” generically, but you know, I’m a geek. 🙂 I like to mention these things.

The passcode is there to protect your content and access to your account. You should not be able to just bypass it…so if you forget your passcode, the option Amazon gives you will wipe your content off your device, and make you prove again that you should have access to the account.

That makes for a simple bottom line: don’t forget your passcode. 🙂 Some people write them down or print them out and store them at a bank in a safe deposit box (really). One nice thing is that they can then leave access to the safe deposit box in the event of their deaths (or, conceivably, incapacitation). Whether that’s okay with your account or not (sharing your passcode), well, that can vary. It’s okay with Amazon that more than one person on your account has your passcode.

What does happen if you forget?

Oh, one thing: Amazon does not have your passcode and can’t give it to you. That’s my understanding: the device passcode is only stored locally (in other words, it isn’t on Amazon’s servers…just on your device). I don’t know for sure that’s true…but I do know Amazon can’t/won’t give it to you.

For all of the current Kindle EBRs (Voyage, Paperwhite 3, ((and the Paperwhite 2)), and the 7th Generation entry level (the “Mindle Touch”), the process is the same:

Where you would put in your passcode, you enter

111222777

and then tap OK.

You’ll have to redownload your Kindle store content…after you re-register your device (and you’ll need wi-fi for that).

Interestingly, with the current Fire Tablets, you can reset your password without losing your content!

Manage Your Kindle (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*)

Here’s Amazon’s instructions on it:

  1. On your computer or mobile device, go to Manage Your Content and Devices, and then select Your Devices.
  2. From the list of devices registered to your Amazon account, select your Fire Tablet.
  3. Select the Device Actions drop-down menu, and then select Remote Lock.
  4. Enter and then confirm a new password or PIN, and then select Lock Device.
  5. From your Fire Tablet, tap Unlock Device.
  6. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen to unlock your device. Enter your lock screen password or PIN, and then tap OK.

Why is that safe?

You need to be able to log into the account to access that page…so you still need a passcode.

That is such an improvement that I can only hope that they can do something similar with the EBRs in the future!

Going back to earlier models, the technique changes. For example, on the Kindle Keyboard (AKA Kindle 3), you enter “resetmykindle” rather than the number sequence above.

If you have questions about a specific model, feel free to ask. 🙂
