The existence of this series is kind of funny to me. I did a comedy bit years ago on our community access TV show (Freedom from Fear) called “In Search of the Seventies”. I treated it as a mystery as to whether or not the Seventies even (culturally) existed. I asked if they were really just “…the end of the Sixties and the start of the Eighties”.

I think that’s because I was too close to it. I was really engaging in pop culture in the Seventies…well, often culture that wasn’t so popular, but you know what I mean. 😉 I didn’t have the distance from it and maturity to recognize what was special about it.

Certainly, I thought the 1960s had a unique culture…with the Beatles in part driving the bus.

As to the 1980s, well, New Wave music seemed to stand out to me.

The 1970s? At that time, I wasn’t seeing what made it special.

Now I do. 🙂

People can certainly now recognize something as being styled as though it was in the 1970s…after all, there was even a very popular show called That ’70s Show…about a decade and a half ago.

I’m doing a post in another blog of mine, The Measured Circle, about the geek culture of the 1970s (and modern geek culture was arguably born then…Dungeons and Dragons, Star Wars, the first Star Trek convention…), but that one may be more of a listing covering various topics (update: here is that post: The Geeky Seventies). I thought I’d do a fuller post here on books in the 1970s, and not limiting it to geek-friendly books. 🙂

In the 1960s, the concepts of censorship and creative freedom changed in the United States. This was being reflected in all media. 1968 saw the introduction of the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) movie ratings system, for example. While you might think that would be a sign of more restrictiveness, it actually meant that “X-rated” movies had a legitimate place. Movie theatres could avoid accusations of contributing to the delinquency of minors by having rules which (putatively, at least), kept them out of those showings.

Themes of sex and violence were much more accepted, again, riding a wave from the 1960s. We were also ready for more openness on “non-traditional” roles in our characters.

Watergate brought both a distrust in the institutions, and an interest in non-fiction.

Perhaps related to that was a trend for self-help books. That trend had arguably started before the rising tide in 1973 of belief that the highest levels of government had been involved in a 1972 break-in for political purposes, but books that had to do with independence (self-help, health) really took off in 1972 and continued through the decade.

Genre books went mainstream, notably the arrival of Stephen King.

In fact, I’d say that is a trend with some some of the others as well. The 1960s cracked open the old institutions…the 1970s commercialized the counter culture.

In book selling (I’m a former brick-and-mortar bookstore manager), the democratization of books continued with the opening of the first Crown Books (1977): the idea of discounting all books was controversial…some people see that (and cheap e-books) as devaluing literature, while others see it as making them more available to more people. The 1970s were when Barnes & Noble really became a national chain, with Leonard Riggio buying it in 1971 and it expanding through the decade (including advertising on TV, a breakthrough).

It’s also worth noting that the first e-book was made available by Michael S. Hart (Project Gutenberg) in 1971…although the market didn’t really take off until the introduction of the Kindle in 2007.

This is something people with the

Amazon Echo

have wanted, and it’s another major new feature.

Your Echo (not yet available to the public on general sale, but a number of people have them, including me, when they opened it to invitation only sales) can now read you your Audible audiobooks!

Now, some of you might be surprised that I’m excited by that. Regular readers know I great prefer to listen to text-to-speech (TTS…software reading a book out loud to you) as opposed to audiobooks…unless I’ve already read the book.

For me, an audiobook is like a movie: it gives me someone else’s interpretations of the characters. Even when the person reading the audiobook is the author, I prefer to layer that onto the words myself.

Listening to TTS is, for me, like sight-reading…reasonably neutral. Yes, there are some mistakes (is “lives” the plural of “life” or a verb, for example?), but that’s akin to typos in a p-book (paperbook)…I do okay with those in both formats.

So, there are definitely times I might want the Echo to read me a book I’ve already read.

If you go into your Echo app (you probably have it on your phone, but you could be getting to it on a computer at http://echo.amazon.com), you’ll now see “Audible” as a choice in your menu.

“Audible” is an audiobook company, owned by Amazon.

Even though I’ve almost never bought an audiobook, I have 41 books there. That’s from free audiobooks, often that you can get because you bought the e-book.

If I want to hear Tim Curry reading A Christmas Carol, for example, I can now ask the Echo to play that for me.

This also works with Audible books you have with many books you may have borrowed from

Kindle Unlimited (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*)

This could work very well for kids, although I would use it as an adult.

These are the commands (maybe we should call those “requests”….commands sounds so…imperious) 😉 you can do audibly with the Echo:

• “Alexa (or “Amazon”, if you’ve chosen that as your wake word…more wake words may be coming…that’s going to be true for the rest of these requests), play the book [title]”
• “Alexa, play the audiobook [title]”
• “Alexa (or “Amazon”, if you’ve chosen that as your wake word…more wake words may be coming), play [title] from Audible”
• “Alexa, (or “Amazon”, if you’ve chosen that as your wake word…more wake words may be coming), read [title]”
• “Alexa, pause”
• “Alexa, resume my book”
• “Alexa, go back  [30 seconds]”
• “Alexa, go forward [30 seconds]”

Skipping chapter is not currently supported by voice. You can skip chapters using the Echo app.

It will, by the way, know where you were in the book…even if you were sight-reading the e-book (if it’s Whispersync for Voice compatible).

By the time the Echo is released for general purchase (I’m guessing that’s in July), it will be quite impressive and even practical.

I guess I should say a quick word about what the Echo is. It’s an “ambient computing” device. You are using it somewhat like you would use Siri on your iPhone, but it’s always on and available. It can hear you quite well…across a room, perhaps in other rooms (and the latter definitely with an included remote).

Will it become part of your life?

I think so. It has recently been passing a test of that for me. 🙂 I find myself wanting to use it when it isn’t available. In other words, I spontaneously see a use for it, not just when I see it or consciously think of it.

For example, I got out of the shower this morning, and wanted to hear the news. I’m away from my Echo right now, but I just wanted to say, “Alexa, what’s the news?” I would have heard a summary from several sources, some of it in recorded human voices, some of it via text-to-speech. Instead, I had to go into a different room and turn on the TV for CNN. That doesn’t sound like much, but it was an inconvenient time.

More than once, I’ve wanted to ask the Echo for weather information when it wasn’t available.

Oh, I’ve also now reordered something using the Echo. That worked just fine. It’s really a remarkable product:

We have animals around our house. We aren’t in the wilds, we’re in a suburb…but there is open space not far from us. We don’t see raccoons at our house, for example, but they might get under the deck. All of this gets our terriers really going: that’s part of why we are having somebody do yard clean-up right now. That should reduce unwanted animals. Oh, and I just found out one of our neighbors had a  family of red foxes under their house! As the California drought continues, we’ll see a lot more of this…particularly, cougars in the suburbs.

This product is just like a regular kitchen garbage bag…but it smells like mint. The smell is somewhat strong at first, but not unpleasant.

We had a spot where there was a rat hole, and I tried a few things. Just sticking one of these bags in the rat hole worked! No sign of them at that hole again (which I had even covered up with aluminum foil previously, which often works…they chewed through that).

I was told what the cost of reordering the bags was going to be (you can currently only reorder Prime eligible products…not order something new, and not something which isn’t Prime) and could have declined. Interestingly, despite what I just said, this order wasn’t Prime…but had been last time, I think. It still ordered it.

Let me share with you a suggestion I’ve made to Amazon (through the Echo app), which I think could be huge for them.

I suggested that they let us give items we’ve ordered “friendly names”…”Pat’s vitamins”, “Mint garbage bags”, “Fluffy’s favorite cat toy”, and so on). That’s especially useful for the Echo, but would also be valuable for searching orders at the website

It would greatly add to “stickiness” for Amazon customers as well. You might not even remember the formulation of those vitamins (although it would give you the official name when you reordered it as part of the confirmation), which would make you less likely to want to go somewhere else. If you had one hundred of those (we could have that), recreating it would be a bear, even if another site allowed it.

I told them I’d like to be able to retroactively go back through my previous orders and add those names.

We’ll see if we get it. 🙂

Until then, for those of you who can, enjoy your Echo reading you a book around the house!

Whoops, one last thing: at this point, the Echo doesn’t have a sleep timer…so if you start it reading a book and then fall asleep, I assume it would just keep going until the book finished.  I suspect a sleep timer is coming…

I’m happy for a lot of reasons to live in the San Francisco Bay Area…not least because it is such a book-loving place. We have a rich literary history, there are still lots of brick-and-mortar bookstores (including specialty ones), and, well, you see a lot of people reading. 🙂

In Amazon’s fifth annual “Most Well-Read Cities in America”:

two cities in the area are in the top twenty: San Francisco at #7 and San Jose at #16. San Diego, also in California, comes in at #13.

What was #1?

Seattle, where Amazon is headquartered. That might be a coincidence, but it isn’t entirely clear to me how they developed the ranking (despite what they say in the press release…it just isn’t enough information about their methodology).

They also do some pull outs of more data…most interesting to me was that Washington, D.C. bought the most p-books (paperbooks)…more than Seattle. Has having Amazon in the city made them more likely to use Kindle books…or is D.C. just slow to adapt (which they can certainly be in other areas of life)?

We had some people doing yard clean-up (ivy removal, tree trimming, and so on).  I told the person in charge about our

I told them to just yell through the patio door to ask “Alexa” for any music they want. 🙂 They thought that was so cool! They started a Prime playlist, and it was loud enough to hear as they worked. I made sure they knew how to make it stop when they left, though.  😉

It’s a pretty interesting selection, with some target marketing (by age group, for example), some sales (50% off some books), and 7,849 books overall!

They seem to be mostly new releases (at least the featured ones), and I’m not seeing featured indies (independently published books). Still, it’s nice to have a listing of some of the newer titles.

Get a mass market paperback with free shipping…without Prime

Amazon keeps doing all kinds of interesting things.

They are now offering free shipping on items under ten ounces and under $10. Many mass market paperbacks are going to fit those criteria.

It may take a while, which is one of the reasons Prime still has an advantage, and of course, it’s not like getting an e-book in sixty seconds. 🙂

I actually think this may have a bigger impact on people who sell vitamins, but still…intriguing.

They haven’t abandoned the physical world, of course, where profit margins can be considerably higher than digital items. They are delivering same day now, in many cities, within an hour in some places, and now this free shipping…Amazon certainly isn’t killing the physical goods market!

They asked attendees of Book Expo America, and you can see pictures of people holding paper (fascinating to me that they all had paper on which to write…I suppose tablets might not have photographed well, but if I had been attending and they had asked me, I wouldn’t have had any paper 😉 ) on which they have written their answers.

As a quick answer, I suppose I might say, “It is the most intimate experience you can have with another person’s intellect, which will make you more empathetic.”

Not just in, say, the top 100…in the top four!

Well, in the top four of apps that only drain your battery when you are using them, but more than GPS? In the same category as Netflix?

Sure, an app on a SmartPhone (that’s what this covers) is going to use a lot more battery charge than reading on EBR E-Book Reader) which is not backlit.

Still, outside of maybe look-up and syncing, I just don’t see what makes it that much of a charge-hog.

Kris Calvin is my sibling, who has recently published a first novel. I wasn’t involved in the production of the book, except as a beta reader (and any comments I made there were anonymous), and contributing to the crowdfunding. We’ve had some interesting discussions about the process, and I have given some advice about e-book publishing in particular. It’s been fascinating for me to watch! Right now, with only a few days of publication, the book has 4.7 stars out of 5 on Amazon, with twenty reviews. I don’t think it’s appropriate for me to write a review, but I am impressed with that. One Murder More (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*)

What follows is Kris’ reaction to the June 1st “launch day” for One Murder More: I asked Kris to write something about that for you, my readers.

One Murder More, my debut work as a fiction writer, is a political mystery novel. It features lobbyist Maren Kane, who finds herself embroiled in a murder investigation in California’s capital city of Sacramento. Populated with a diverse cast of suspects and sidekicks, I intended the story to weave a challenging puzzle of suspense, sprinkled with humor.

Three days ago, June 1, 2015, was the release and public publication date for One Murder More, via Amazon and brick-and-mortar bookstores. The weeks prior felt like the lead-up to a major holiday. Christmas works as a good example.

There was lots of fiddling with website design and content for my author site (buying and trimming the tree), ample tweeting and posting the milestones that led up to publication (writing and mailing holiday cards), and even reviewing wine and dessert options for a local bookstore signing event (catering the annual holiday party).   All of which generated a sensation similar to what I experienced as a child pre-holiday, when the focus was largely the anticipation of gifts—which, in the end, might be what I wanted or not (positive or negative reviews and high or low sales numbers).

Yet, despite emotional similarities one important difference between “Pub-date Eve” and Christmas Eve is that Santa has a scheduled appearance. He may mess with that a bit if the latest Xbox isn’t available in his workshop, and he has to promise delivery several weeks later.  But for the most part the man in red and his reindeer punch a clock.

In contrast, when a new novel is put out into the world it’s unclear not only when, but also whether the anticipated payoff will arrive.

So when June 1^st, “the great day”, finally came, I was up at 12:01 AM at my computer, trying to catch up on some work. I noticed the time, and took a moment to honor that moment, to reflect that this would be the only “first minute of the first day of my first novel publication” ever in my life.

Then I checked the clock at 12:02 AM June 1^st and realized nothing felt different, that nothing had actually changed. Even later that day, amidst the furor of much appreciated well wishes, of reviews and tweets, the most notable sensation for me was that nothing had changed.

I think it’s because while a book has two birthdates, neither of them are the launch day.

The first is when the idea for a book becomes clear enough that the writer sits down and begins to type, dictate or put pen to paper—in some way to begin to transform vapor to solid; internal to external; and the “fuzzy daydreams” of unedited plot and characters emerge to see the light.  (Thanks to author Catriona McPherson for that phrase to characterize the first draft process).

That merits the first candle on the cake.

The second birthdate is when the book becomes “final” for publication. For hardback, this means it’s gone to the printer and no changes can be made. For an e-book there’s more flexibility, but there still comes a point at which the novel has been formatted for Kindle and change must be conscious and assertive and great enough to cause a writer to reopen his or her work.

So while the day the book goes on sale to the public is certainly one for celebration, it seems to me to be more a graduation than a birth. It’s a marker in a path that has already been cleared and civilized with wood chips or gravel, if not stone.

I’ve been an avid reader all my life, and as an adult I get through 2 to 3 novels a week. But I’d never considered becoming a writer until three years ago when I picked up a copy of Kate Atkinson’s Case Histories, a challenging, complex mystery with distinct storylines that come together seamlessly in the end. Having worked in politics and advocacy for many years, where no plot line is clean and motives for murder and mayhem seem endless, I realized Atkinson’s structure might work to enable me to write a book based on what I lived and knew.

That was August 2012. I wish I noted the exact date, but I sat down to write one day of that month and continued to do so every morning through October. I now realize that was the first birth of one Murder More.

I spent several months rewriting, took time off for single parenting and working a day job and then went back to it. There were several drafts, multiple editors and finally a willing and supportive publisher, Inkshares, Inc.

The book was out of my hands and on the way to the printer January 25, 2015. Birthdate number two.

Six months later, it still doesn’t feel quite real to me. It’s as though one day I was baking banana bread in my kitchen, and decided it might be nice to add lime to the batter.  A friend came over and said it was wonderful banana bread, so unique, and that it should be sold in the local markets. Soon loaves of my bread were out where lots of people could try it, some who like lime and some who do not.

There’s a joy in that process, in learning and sharing something that was internal for so long. But before long there’s also a strong drive to get back in the kitchen and start baking again. And that’s where I am now. I miss lobbyist Maren Kane and company, my characters, the friends I made in those three years of development.

And since One Murder More is the first of a series, the second book has formed in my head. This time I’m prepared to write down the date and to have the cake and first candle ready.

Monthly Kindle Deals for $3.99 or less each: June 2015

Amazon does the Kindle Daily Deal (at AmazonSmile…benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*), which discounts (usually) four books a day (often general fiction, a romance, a science fiction/fantasy book, and a kids’ book).

They’ve also been doing Monthly Kindle Book Deals for $3.99 or less each) (at AmazonSmile). That’s a rebranding: they used to say it was “100 Books”, but that’s also gotten to be more…there are 231 for this month at the time of writing (ninety-two more than last month…it has been trending upwards, a huge skyrocket of a jump!).

Those prices only apply to the USA, and one weird thing is that some of the books seem to sell out at that price sometimes (or become unavailable for some other reason).

It’s also interesting…about 50% of the books in the USA Kindle store are $3.99 or less (1,754,330 of 3,533,257). Still, these are on sale, and that’s worth something. 

Another thing is that many of these books may be part of

Kindle Unlimited (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*)

Amazon lists that information prominently. If they are, then you need to consider whether it is worth buying them…even at these low prices. While they are in KU, you can, if you are a subscriber (and there’s a free month available right now), read them at no additional cost. There are, of course, advantages to owning books, especially if you want to re-read them. A book could move out of KU at any time. Even if you think you want to own it, if you are a KU member, you could always read it first to make sure. 😉 I will mark them with KU.

Oh, interesting! I see they are now also clearly marking when a book is available through the KOLL (Kindle Owners’ Lending Library)! That’s nice…there was a period of time when it was quite hard to tell. Eligible Prime members can borrow one per calendar month. If you are both a Prime member and a Kindle Unlimited subscriber (like me), I think you are more likely to get them through KU (where you can have up to ten at a time out, with no limit per month), but I’m sure I have many readers who are Prime members and don’t subscribe to KU. I’ll mark those with KOLL.

I’m going to list some of the $3.99 or lower ones that caught my eye…I’m not necessarily recommending them, but I do think they are interesting.

The ones I link (if I actually link to specific books) also don’t block text-to-speech access**…but I think blocking it is becoming rarer.

Summary

While the huge drop in books under $10 in the range of one penny to fifty dollars from last month flattened out with a tiny rebound, there are some concerning elements this time. In particular, New York Times bestseller hardback fiction equivalents jumped $1.69…I think that’s the most I’ve seen in a single month. Only five of them (25%) were under $10. The average price was higher than this back in 2013, but we could certainly be seeing the impact of the return of the Agency Model. The number of free books to own, both with and without public domain, dropped. The number of books in Kindle Unlimited was up significantly…we could hit a million books in the program by July 1st. Overall, my sense here is that the Big 5 tradpubs (traditional publishers) may be raising prices, and that’s not quite being offset by relatively stable prices on indies (independently published books) and smaller tradpubs.

Older data were drawn using http://www.jungle-search.com, newer data with http://www.ereaderiq.com (from the same people). There are a number of possible sources of errors (eRi, Amazon, me), but these are probably pretty good.

• The free books referenced here are from the Kindle store: there are many other sources for free books
• My search for textbooks definitely has false positives (books that aren’t really textbooks). I search for -domain (to eliminate public domain titles, which would be older books, generally) textbook. That would find a book about textbooks, for example
• I searched for “Spanish edition” to find Spanish language books. That has some false positives as well
• I look at price percentages of books in the range of one penny to fifty dollars, to eliminate freebies and limit textbooks
• The price point analysis is for books at that specific price: it does not represent a range of prices
• I compared the percentage of price points in the Price Point Analysis when I showed the difference…not the number of books
• This information is based on what a United States customer sees

I love trivia!

I’ve had books about it for years.

When I managed a brick-and-mortar bookstore, I had a publisher’s rep who had been a five-time Jeopardy champion (that was the limit back then)…and in casual things, I could win. 🙂 So much of Jeopardy is about the buzzer, though, so there’s no way to tell how well you would do on the show.

I was the only person to have twice judged the Millard Fillmore Trivia Hunt. That was a great event! It was put together as a team competition for high school students. The teams would get a set of questions on a Friday, and then have the weekend to find the answers (no internet was available)…and then on Monday, there would be a judging.

That’s how I first got involved: I helped teams. 🙂 While I often knew the answers offhand, the contest required that you document them. My being able to answer the questions helped them figure out where to look for proof.

I think one of my favorite parts was the teams’ lawyers (again, one of the students) would have to argue for their answers. You could prove yourself right…and perhaps equally importantly, you might disprove other people’s answers.

There were two arguments where I would still maintain that we were right and other people were wrong, but we didn’t win that (although we got credit, too).

One was in the category of Musical Cities, and the clue was, “A famous shoeshine boy** worked here.” I was sure right off that the song was Chattanooga Choo Choo…even though the shoeshine boy wasn’t famous, it was the only one that would be likely to fit.

So, the official answer was Chattanooga.

However, we argued that was incorrect…the right answer is New York City.

Why?

The shoeshine boy is in the beginning of the song:

“…is that the Chattanooga Choo Choo?”

“Yes, yes….Track Twenty-Nine.”

“Well, you can give me a shine.”

Later in the song, we learn this:

“You leave old Pennsylvania Station about a quarter to four…”

Penn Station, of course, is in New York City…so that’s where the “shoeshine boy” works.

Chattanooga should be an incorrect answer…but they accepted both.

The other one was a question about two people (at the time) who had been made honorary citizens of the United States.

I knew them: Winston Churchill and the Marquis de Lafayette.

We argued (on my advice) that  the Marquis de Lafayette should not be ruled as a correct answer, since that’s really a title, not a name. You can’t just say the “President of the United States” when you are looking for which one did something. We said that the only right answer should be Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier de Lafayette.

Again, both answers were accepted. 🙂

You can tell: I enjoy trivia.

I often light-heartedly give trivia points in the Amazon Kindle forums, too.

There is a section for

I looked for the Fred L. Worth books, but they aren’t available in the Kindle store.

Hm…I have to say, I’m finding a lot of books I don’t really think of as trivia books….well, let’s say trivia quiz books. There are a lot of books (like the Imponderables series, which I really enjoyed) that have odd facts, but that’s not the same thing.

I would like ones with pop culture and wider trivia, and not just on one thing. 🙂

I’ll have to dig some more.

In the meantime, here are a few of my favorite trivia questions…I’ll provide the answers soon, but feel free to guess in the comments. One rule: you can’t look them up, you have to just know. 🙂

• What is the one foreign capital named after a U.S. President?
• What is the only city on two continents?
• What is the deepest lake in the world?
• What is Forsythe P. Jones’ nickname?
• What is Templeton Peck’s nickname?

One of these could be argued, but follow what I learned in F.O.M.F. (Friends Of Millard Fillmore): give the answer you think I want. 😉
