Amazon’s 100 Science Fiction & Fantasy Books to Read in a Lifetime

I really appreciated that Amazon sent me an e-mail on this one! For some reason, I’m not seeing a press release, so this definitely gave me a needed heads up.

Amazon has done their latest list of “Books to Read in a Lifetime”, and I figured I would have read pretty much all of the “Science Fiction & Fantasy Books”**. 🙂

While I do think of myself as an eclectic reader, that wasn’t always really the case. I used to read a lot (a lot!) of SF&F.

After I became the manager of a brick and mortar bookstore, though, I made a conscious effort to broaden my reading. I encouraged (not required) my employees to read a book from every section in the store…and I did that myself.

I suppose the fact that I haven’t read as many as I had anticipated has to do with the chronological distribution.

However, it may have to do with the selection as well. 🙂

I would certainly recommend some others…that’s not to say that these aren’t all worthy: as I mentioned, I haven’t read quite a few of these.

One of the first things that stands out to me is the lack of books that are putatively for children. No Oz? No Wind in the Willows?

Second, and it’s understandable, it looks like it’s one book per author. 🙂

I may add to this post later (have to start my two hour commute this morning). 🙂 I’m hoping to be able to give you a little more insight into the list, but before I do…here are a few I might have included (sticking to my presumed rule above, one book per author):

• The Circus of Dr. Lao by Charles G. Finney
• The Land of Oz by L. Frank Baum (I think the Wizard of Oz is actually the one in the series I like the least)
• The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster (illustrated by Jules Feiffer)
• Stormbringer by Michael Moorcock (not sure if that’s necessarily the Elric of Melniboné book I’d pick but it’s the first one that comes to mind…and Elric would be included)

Hm…interesting to me that actual science fiction novels aren’t coming to mind first as much as fantasy. That might be because of how I’m reacting to the list.

The Joy of Text…to speech, that is

My commute today was two hours…one way.

Okay, on the way back, it was only about one hour and forty-five minutes, just due to traffic patterns.

Welcome to California! 😉

That was actually unusually long for me (I traveled outside of my regular area to do a training). However, an hour one way is not far out of what I often do.

It can be tough driving…I’d say I was under twenty miles an hour for at least several miles at a stretch this morning.

I am a patient person, and really, I’m okay in a traffic jam. Physically, it’s a lot harder for me than it used to be. I have a chronic condition that makes it hard to sit for a long time…or stand for a short one. 😉

Mentally, though?

I look forward to a long commute.

Why?

Text-to-speech on my Kindle Fire HDX.

I’ve been using text-to-speech (software that reads a book out loud to you) regularly when driving since Amazon started giving it to us at no additional cost on the Kindle 2.

Unfortunately, none of the currently available new directly from Amazon EBRs (E-Book Readers) offer text-to-speech (they don’t have sound at all).

The Fire tablets all  do, though, including the $49.99

The TTS is sooo much better than it used to be!

I really like being able to enjoy my books while driving!

I wasn’t thrilled with the book. I did get it for free as one of the

Kindle First books (at AmazonSmile*)

and it was okay…I just didn’t think it was great.

It was reminiscent of Philip K. Dick, but it didn’t have that author’s magic for me.

Still, it was so much better than listening to talk radio or music, at least as far as I’m concerned.

There aren’t a lot of tricks to it.

One thing is to lock the orientation…swipe down from the top and lock the rotation.

If you don’t do that, the orientation may try to flip while you are driving…which will stop the TTS. That’s inconvenient, for sure! Locking the orientation stops that.

I actually run a physical cable to my car’s sound system, but in many cars (including mine), you’d have the option of Bluetooth. I do, but it runs down the battery too much for my tastes.

I keep a car charger in my car, but I don’t usually use it on my Fire while it is doing TTS. I get a buzzing when it’s plugged into the charger. I use the one that came in this set:

Could I use audiobooks?

Sure, I could…I just down like them as much. I don’t like the narrator (be they author or actor) interpeting the characters for me.

There would also be the cost of an audiobook, typically…but as a

I would have many, many available as part of my $9.99 monthly membership fee.

What I really want from my TTS is…more of it. 🙂

I want my

Amazon Echo (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*)

to be able to do it.

Now, I even more want my

Amazon Fire TV (at AmazonSmile*)

to be able to do it! Why the Fire TV 2 more than the Echo? It’s because I can listen to my Fire TV on a Bluetooth headset, which I can’t do currently with the Echo. I could listen to TTS on the wireless headset while exercising: nice!

I think that capability may come…at least, for books where the publisher hasn’t blocked the text-to-speech access**, or where the text isn’t available to the software (in some graphic novels, for example, the text is really part of the image)..

I’d also love some sort of wearable with it. It wouldn’t even need a screen where I could sight read the book…although, with Word Runner, the one word at a time speed reading software on the new Fire tablets, you could have a pretty small screen and still read a book reasonably well.

** A Kindle with text-to-speech can read any text downloaded to it…unless that access is blocked by the publisher inserting code into the file to prevent it. That’s why you can have the device read personal documents to you (I’ve done that). I believe that this sort of access blocking disproportionately disadvantages the disabled, although I also believe it is legal (provided that there is at least one accessible version of each e-book available, however, that one can require a certification of disability). For that reason, I don’t deliberately link to books which block TTS access here (although it may happen accidentally, particularly if the access is blocked after I’ve linked it). I do believe this is a personal decision, and there  are legitimate arguments for purchasing those books.

Other people think a device will be degraded through any sort of use. That’s understandable: when I used to teach QuickBooks, I would jokingly explain depreciation by saying that a computer depreciated 100% as soon as you got it to the car. 😉

However, that sort of massive depreciation is not the case with Kindle EBRs (E-Book Readers) and Fire tablets.

At least, not for one that are certified refurbished by Amazon.

They check out the devices thoroughly…and you get the same 1-year warranty you would get with a new one.

You won’t save a lot of money, but you will save some. The Kindle Voyage is available right now for $30 less…that’s significant, but it’s still $169…not  exactly garage sale prices. 🙂

You also never know what they’ll have…it just depends on what they have in stock.

It uses cartoon characters to explain physics (Scott is a physics professor at Sarah Lawrence).

It’s too soon for there to be any reviews, and as I’ve mentioned before, I don’t think it’s appropriate for me to review my own family’s books for you. 🙂

One important point:

Regular readers will know that I don’t knowingly link to books where text-to-speech access has been blocked.

They may be surprised to see that the Amazon product page says that this book is “not enabled”.

That’s come up with other books in the blog. It’s not that text-to-speech has been blocked in this case: it’s that the words aren’t accessible to the program because they are part of the illustrations.

The text-to-speech software that our Fire tablets (and older EBRs…E-Book Readers) with text-to-speech capability use needs to be able to read the text. It has to be text: not in an illustration.

I know in this case that Scott’s publisher did not block it…it’s just a technical thing.

That’s why it is concerning that Amazon puts this on the product page:

“The publisher has requested not to enable Text-to-Speech for this title.”

I believe that is inaccurate in this case.

My guess is that that explanation appears on every book’s product page when it says that text-to-speech is “not enabled”.

I suggested to Scott that Amazon be contacted, and a request be made to have that language removed.

I’ve found Amazon to be pretty responsive in the past…I hope this is something that they can change in this case and others where it would be appropriate.

Holiday Deals on Kindle Books (replaces Monthly Kindle Deals) this month

Amazon does the Kindle Daily Deal (at AmazonSmile…benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*), which used to discount four books a day (often general fiction, a romance, a science fiction/fantasy book, and a kids’ book). Now, it seems like it is generally more books than that, and not categorized.

They usually do Monthly Kindle Book Deals for $3.99 or less each (at AmazonSmile). This month, though, that same link takes you to Holiday Deals on Kindle Books (we are in the same month as Black Friday, after all). They do end on November 30th. There are many more of these than the typical monthly deals: 1,020 at the time of writing! They are up to 85% off…but some of them are more than the normal $3.99 top limit…the most expensive one I found was $13.99, and did not appear to be discounted…that one may be a fluke. Others were $5.99, though, and down from there.

Those prices only apply to the USA, and one weird thing is that some of the books seem to sell out at that price sometimes (or become unavailable for some other reason).

Another thing is that many of these (it looks like 291) books may be part of

Kindle Unlimited (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*)

Amazon lists that information prominently. If they are, then you need to consider whether it is worth buying them…even at these low prices. While they are in KU, you can, if you are a subscriber (and there’s a free month available right now), read them at no additional cost. There are, of course, advantages to owning books, especially if you want to re-read them. A book could move out of KU at any time. Even if you think you want to own it, if you are a KU member, you could always read it first to make sure. 😉 I will mark them with KU.

I’m going to list some of the books in this sale that caught my eye…I’m not necessarily recommending them, but I do think they are interesting.

It’s definitely worth looking at the list: I’d be surprised if you couldn’t find a gift for somebody here (e-books from the Kindle store can be delayed until the appropriate gift giving occasion).

** A Kindle with text-to-speech can read any text downloaded to it…unless that access is blocked by the publisher inserting code into the file to prevent it. That’s why you can have the device read personal documents to you (I’ve done that). I believe that this sort of access blocking disproportionately disadvantages the disabled, although I also believe it is legal (provided that there is at least one accessible version of each e-book available, however, that one can require a certification of disability). For that reason, I don’t deliberately link to books which block TTS access here (although it may happen accidentally, particularly if the access is blocked after I’ve linked it). I do believe this is a personal decision, and there  are legitimate arguments for purchasing those books.

I have repeatedly lauded Amazon’s Mayday feature, introduced with the 2013 Kindle Fire tablets. For example, I said:

“There has never been an easier way to get Customer Service…”

I know something about that.

I was a manager of a brick-and-mortar bookstore, and of course, there is a lot of Customer Service involved in the success or failure of a physical store.

More relevant here is that, in my job, I take phone calls from users on a help line (I do that maybe one day a week). I can remote into their computers so I can see what they are doing, and I can (with their permission) take over the computer so I can do things for them.

I do it with PC Anywhere, although we are testing another choice.

It can also be done to some extent with Webex, and I have done that.

I’m primarily a trainer, and sure, most of the time I want to train somebody how to do something themselves. However, in some cases it’s just a configuration thing which has to be changed only once, so it doesn’t make sense to teach the caller how to do it when they are in the middle of a mission critical operation. It’s better to just fix it in a case like that.

Sometimes, also, I don’t know what the answer is right away. I may need to do some trial and error to find the solution. Directing someone to perform the steps which fail is counterproductive for them learning how to do something. It’s better that I figure it out, and then either fix it or explain it to them.

Amazon made an amazing step forward with almost instant onscreen help at the touch of a button…and they promoted it heavily. There were many commercials, and Amazon CEO (Chief Executive Officer) Jeff Bezos called it the “…greatest feature we’ve ever made…” in this

I have said that it is the reason to buy a Fire tablet rather than another company’s tablet…even if the other tablet might have better specs. That’s especially true for people who aren’t techies. You could give a Fire tablet to someone who doesn’t know how to send an e-mail. That person could just tap a button (it’s not hard to do), and a helpful rep could appear on the screen…and even start the e-mail.

I’ve used it several times: even being very techie, I’ve found it useful. I joked about it here:

Karen, one of my regular readers and commenters, recently got one of the newest generation of Fire tablets, which I wrote about here:

I’ve ordered one, but it’s not here yet.

Karen is an experienced Fire tablet user, and looked for Mayday…and couldn’t find it.

Usually, you just swipe down from the top, and there it is.

Karen went to an earlier gen Fire tablet, and asked the Mayday function on that tablet where it was on the new one. 🙂

Karen reported being told basically that it wasn’t on the new tablet.

Yet, the tablet’s Amazon product page

says it does have Mayday**.

So, I asked Amazon.

I was told that it’s different on the new tablets. You don’t evoke Mayday directly from the tablet (so in that sense, the Mayday rep on the older tablet was right).

I was told that when customers call Kindle Support, then they can have screen sharing assistance.

That sounds like something I wrote about earlier this year:

I thought co-pilot was going to be an option for people on a computer…an enhancement to doing a typical Kindle Support call (which are already great, in my opinion).

That is a very, very different  experience from what we have had on Mayday.

If I’m understanding this correctly (and I’ve asked for clarification), these are the two scenarios:

Previous generation Mayday: puzzled customer swipes down from the top on the tablet, taps the Mayday button, gives permission with a tap, and a live person appears in a video window on the tablet to help.

New generation:  puzzled customer looks for help on the tablet. Puzzled customer finds a link to help on the tablet. Puzzled customer then gets SmartPhone (or landline phone) and calls Kindle Service. Now, communicating on the phone, representative somehow gets permission to screenshare. I’m guessing that whole process is not going to make the fifteen second response time goal set originally for Mayday. 😉

I’ve asked Amazon these questions:

Can the representative control the device, or is the customer just sharing the screen?

How does the customer give permission for the sharing? I know Amazon had been testing a “co-pilot” type option before.

Does the representative have any “presence” on the device? Is there a video window? Is there audio on the device of the representative? Or is the human to human communication all done over the phone?

Will Mayday as we know it, with the video window, still be available on the older models which have it for now?

I’ll let you know what I hear back, and I do expect to hear back. I think, and surveys tend to bear it out, that Amazon has terrific Customer Service.

If it does turn out that initiating Mayday from the tablets is gone in the new gen, that feels like a big step backwards for customers. It might have been essentially unavoidable: Mayday always seemed like it had to be quite expensive. Yes, access to the device could save some real time (it does in my job), but having live people available 24/7 to  do that isn’t cheap.

Some Customer Service reps on Mayday did seem a bit uncomfortable being on screen, and there were some technical issues (especially with hearing the person).

Regardless, it was amazing…but perhaps too good to last?

UPDATE: I did hear back from Amazon…they are really good at that. 🙂 I was given permission to share this response:

” A Mayday Screen Sharing session does not include any video chat. We can see only your screen, unless the camera is activated for troubleshooting purposes. 

– The associate can remotely access the Fire or Fire HD to provide tech support. 

– Associates will always ask for permission before they view areas of devices that contain personal information (email, photos, or personal videos). Agents only see what’s displayed on the screen.

– The Mayday button where a Customer Service associate appears on your screen is only available on Kindle Fire HDX (3rd Generation), Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 (3rd Generation), Fire Phone, and Fire HDX 8.9 (4th Generation) devices.”

Summary

Prices are generally up, which is atypical. The percentage of books priced from one penny to fifty dollars which are under $10 has dropped by half a percent…that’s significant. The percentage for the previous month was down 1.5%. This isn’t counter trend, but the New York Times bestseller hardback fiction equivalents were up substantially again…with the average going up seventy-two cents to $13.56. Only two of them were under $10. Available content numbers also tended to decline or have slower growth, including newspapers and magazines. There were more textbooks and Spanish language books, and more for free (both to borrow, as part of the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library or Kindle Unlimited, and to own). Overall, I would describe this Snapshot as troubling, but not panic-inducing. If, and that’s a big if, these general trends were to continue, I think it drive more people to subsers (subscription services…”all you can read” plans, including Kindle Unlimited ((at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*))).

Older data were drawn using http://www.jungle-search.com, newer data with http://www.ereaderiq.com (from the same people). There are a number of possible sources of errors (eRi, Amazon, me), but these are probably pretty good.

• The free books referenced here are from the Kindle store: there are many other sources for free books
• My search for textbooks definitely has false positives (books that aren’t really textbooks). I search for -domain (to eliminate public domain titles, which would be older books, generally) textbook. That would find a book about textbooks, for example
• I searched for “Spanish edition” to find Spanish language books. That has some false positives as well
• I look at price percentages of books in the range of one penny to fifty dollars, to eliminate freebies and limit textbooks
• The price point analysis is for books at that specific price: it does not represent a range of prices
• I compared the percentage of price points in the Price Point Analysis when I showed the difference…not the number of books
• This information is based on what a United States customer sees

If you are reading this on an EBR (E-Book Reader) not capable of displaying video, there is plenty to read on that page as well.

Word Runner is Amazon’s new speed reading feature…somewhat similar to Spritz..I advised Amazon to add something like this back in 2014:

Basically, it shows you one word at a time in the same spot in the center of the screen…your eyes don’t have to keep shifting, so you can read more quickly.

Amazon has given it some nifty features: it slows down for harder words, and you can apparently easily back up if you miss something (just sneezing, you might miss a sentence).

Try it in the video, if you can…you’ll see you can do it.

Now, I’m not sure how much faster it will really be, although Spritz was supposed to be faster for people. I’m not sure that we don’t sometimes process a paragraph at a time, when we are skimming. We know that people don’t need to see all the letters in a word to read it. In fact, usually just the first letter and the last letter is enough, if you know how long the word is. For example, you can probably read this:

T_e  q_ _ _k  r_d  f_x  j_ _ _ _d  o_ _ r  t_e  l_ _ y  b_ _ _ n  d_g.

The good news is that you won’t need to buy one of the new tablets to use it. I think it will come to other recent Fire tablets, but it will also be on Kindle for Android.

That last one may be especially important.

I don’t read much on my phone, although many people do. I find the screen to be too small.

If I’m only reading one word at a time, though? Shouldn’t make a difference that the screen is relatively small…it’s big enough for one word. 🙂

Might this be hard on your eyes? I’m guessing it could be…it might reduce your tendency to blink, so you may not be able to do it for long periods of time without using the “brake” feature.

I think speed reading is a killer feature, especially for non-fiction. Part of it will depend on your retention…it might not matter that you could read your homework assignment 20% faster if you retain less of it.

We tend to remember things by what is different, what isn’t the routine.

With Word Runner, I’m a bit concerned that everything will be the same…you won’t have the variation of the “shape” of sentences and paragraphs.

I remember reading before that retention might be worse with e-books than with p-books (paperbooks), because you didn’t have the imperfections on the pages.

I don’t really know for sure…so I really want to try it!

It might also be quite effective with personal documents!

It’s only going to work with English language books, at least initially. Why does the language matter? That algorithmic stuff that slows it down for hard words…it might not know what is a hard word in Yucatec or Walloon…

We all have so much content available!

I think the newly announced

TiVo BOLT (at AmazonSmile*)

will benefit from two big innovations.

One is commercial skipping…the entire block of commercials, seamlessly, if it’s the right type of content (which includes the big networks).

We pay a few dollars extra to have no commercial on Hulu…and it’s well worth it!

The other innovation is “speed watching”. It can speed up recorded video by 30%…and it will adjust the audio’s pitch so it doesn’t go chipmunky on you.

You bet I would have used that on the Presidential debates! Those are long…I want to see and hear every word, but it takes a long time.
