Amazon’s The Best Books of 2015

Amazon’s The Best Books of 2015

It’s here!

The Best Books of 2015 (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*)

I honestly look forward to these lists each year. As a former manager of a brick-and-mortar bookstore, I like to see what they pick. That’s not because I think they necessarily are the best books, or even are books I am likely to read. It intrigues me. 🙂

It’s also a place I may discover books to buy for other people, and that’s important.

As part of that, it’s key that this isn’t simply a list of 100. It’s a whole storefront. There is a list of the top 100, but you can also see their “best” in a lot of categories:

  • Arts & Photography
  • Audiobooks
  • Biographies & Memoirs
  • Business & Investing
  • Children’s Books
  • Comics & Graphic Novels
  • Cookbooks, Food & Wine
  • Crafts, Home & Garden
  • Fashion
  • Kindle Singles
  • History
  • Humor & Entertainment
  • Literature & Fiction
  • Mystery, Thriller & Suspense
  • Nonfiction
  • Romance
  • Science
  • Science Fiction & Fantasy
  • Sports & Outdoors
  • Teen & Young Adult

picks from celebrities, Editors’ Holiday Gift Picks, Best Debuts, and more!

They sent me a press release

Amazon Unveils the Best Books of 2015, Heralding Lauren Groff’s Fates and Furies as the Best Book of the Year

with some interesting tidbits in it.

I want to highlight this one:

“Debut authors in the Top 100: 22”

While this list isn’t limited to Kindle e-books, the expansion of independent publishing that e-books enabled has, I’m sure, affected how debut authors are seen. Since authors don’t need to go through the established channels, it allows the unestablished to break out…and then sometimes go tradpub (traditional publisher), sometimes not.

This is specifically

The Top 100 in Kindle Format (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*)

I have read…exactly zero of them. 😉

That doesn’t meant that I think that some of them might not be the best books of the year. There are some there I would like to read.

It’s more that my pattern of reading isn’t likely to include a book the same year that it is released any more.

What do I read?

  • Books that are gifted to me. Those are usually pretty specialized, and may be my family buying from my Wish List. Those don’t tend to be frontlist, newly published titles
  • Public domain books: generally older
  • Books I get from Kindle Unlimited (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*), Amazon’s subser (subscription service). Again, those don’t tend to be published this year, at least the ones I choose to read

I recently wrote about a jump in books priced $14.99:

Percentage of books priced $14.99 in USA Kindle store leaps up

In that piece, I wrote about us moving more towards a tiered system of readers:

  • Top tier: pay premium prices for new, brand name releases
  • Middle tier: pay for some books, but don’t pay the top prices for new novels…they read independently published books, books that were on sale, books through KU (this would be my tier)
  • Lower tier: read free books

This list is definitely geared toward the top tier reader in that system. Only two of the books are under $5 at time of writing:

  • Smoke by Catherine McKenzie (which is also available through KU…the only one on the list, I believe)
  • The Wonder Garden by Laura Acampara

Most of the books, by far, are over $9.99.

Here are the top 10:

  • Fates and Furies by Lauren Groff
  • Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates
  • Becoming Nicole by Amy Ellis Nutt
  • An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir
  • The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah
  • The Wright Brothers by David McCullough
  • H Is for Hawk by Helen Macdonald
  • Purity: A Novel by Jonathan Franzen
  • Hold Still: A Memoir with Photographs by Sally Mann
  • The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins

The average price at time of writing of those top ten? $14.24

Amazon doesn’t appear to have favored books it has published, with the exception of the category for Kindle Singles noted above.

I know I’m interested in the analysis, but I also know you may be more interested in the actual books. 🙂

Please let me know what you think of the choices, and especially, if there were others you would have listed. You can let me and my readers know by commenting on this post.

Special note: the person who recently arranged

An ILMK interview with Adrian Liang, Amazon Books Editor

has also offered to reach out for me to someone involved with creating this list.

If you have particular questions you would like me to ask them, if I get that opportunity, also let me know that in the comments.

I’m curious, so I’m going to include a couple of polls:

Deja vu saves money for you! 3 day sale on non-Voyage Kindle EBRs (ends Wednesday)

November 10, 2015

Deja vu saves money for you! 3 day sale on non-Voyage Kindle EBRs (ends Wednesday)

Think back…way back…to the day before Halloween! 😉 I ran this post:

3-day sale on Kindle EBRs (except Voyage): $20 off

about a 3-day sale that was $20 off on Kindle EBRs (E-Book Readers…not Fire tablets). Well, they are doing the same sale again, less than two weeks later!

That’s right: you can save $20 ahead of the holidays (although not that much ahead).

This sale ends on Wednesday (November 10th), and you don’t need to be a Prime member for this one.

Here’s what I said last time:

Amazon’s three day sale (probably just in the USA) is on these models:

Kindle, 6″ Glare-Free Touchscreen Display, Wi-Fi – Includes Special Offers (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*) $59.99 (down from $79.99) | 4.2 stars out of 5 | 12,244 customer reviews

The $20 off also means you could get it without the Special Offers ($79.99, down from $99.99) for the same price you would normally pay for an ad-supported model.

This is the entry level model, and it’s a good one. Here are some of the differences between this and the Paperwhite (which I’ll link below):

  • No frontlighting, so you read it like you would a p-book
  • Fewer pixels per inch (167 versus 300), so the image isn’t as sharp (but I would say sharp enough for most casual reading…you might notice it with images, like graphs)
  • Available only in wi-fi…no wi-fi and 3G option (for more money)
  • A bit less heavy, a bit thicker

Kindle for Kids Bundle with the latest Kindle, 2-Year Accident Protection, Kid-Friendly Blue Cover (at AmazonSmile*) $79.99 (down from $99.99) | 4.0 stars | 61 reviews

This is like the above, but includes a ruggedized cover and an extended warranty…since each of those costs $20, this is a big savings, even without the discount.

Certainly something to consider for a gift.

All-New Kindle Paperwhite, 6″ High-Resolution Display (300 ppi) with Built-in Light, Wi-Fi – Includes Special Offers (at AmazonSmile*) $99.99 (down from $119.99) | 4.5 stars | 7,313 reviews

The Paperwhite (this is the latest generation) is a great model Kindle! I’d say it may be my favorite (price and everything taken into account), with the Kindle 3 (Kindle Keyboard) being second…well, wait, lack of TTS makes that a tighter battle. For sight-reading, it’s my favorite. 🙂

Why would you literally pay $100 more (right now) for a top of the line

Kindle Voyage (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*)

?

You do get a few more things:

  • Adaptive light sensor
  • Page press buttons (in addition to touchscreen…these all have touchscreen)
  • Quite a bit less heavy and a tad smaller

Will there be more sales before the holidays?

Sure, that’s likely, although we are getting closer. In fact, I’d be surprised if there weren’t more sales. I would also think there may be shortages, though…this is a sure thing right now.

I’m not sure I’ve said it here in a post (as opposed to a comment), but I do read on a Voyage now. I don’t find it that different from my PW3, but I pretty much just use it to read one particular book before going to sleep. 🙂

Enjoy (whether for yourself or for a gift)!

Read the book before you see the…play

November 10, 2015

Read the book before you see the…play

When an author writes a book, one possible source of future income is an adaptation.

Most people think of movies, or TV shows, and certainly, there can be significant money there.

When we look at the top ten US all-time box office champs, it turns out that not that many of them are based on books (if we don’t include comic books/graphic novels).

  1. Avatar (original)
  2. Titanic (original: based on a real event)
  3. Jurassic World (ultimately based on a book)
  4. Marvel’s The Avengers (based on comic books)
  5. The Dark Knight (based on comic books)
  6. Star Wars – The Phantom Menace (original)
  7. Star Wars (original)
  8. Avengers Age of Ultron (based on comic books)
  9. The Dark Knight Rises (based on comic books)
  10. Shrek 2 (ultimately based on a book)

It occurred to me, though: many of the longest-running Broadway shows (and other plays) are based on books.

Let’s take a look at those longest-running Broadway shows:

  1. The Phantom of the Opera (based on a book)
  2. Chicago (based on another play based on a reporter’s writings)
  3. Cats (based on a book)
  4. The Lion King (based on a movie)
  5. Les Misérables (based on a book)
  6. A Chorus Line (original)
  7. Oh! Calcutta (original)
  8. Mamma Mia! (based on songs)
  9. Beauty and the Beast (ultimately based on a book)
  10. Rent (based on an opera)

As you can see, a lot more plays are based on books…if I kept going, I’d run into more. 🙂

Why is this?

I think attending a play is more like reading a book than when you go to a movie.

Reading is largely imagination (even though they do cheat with things like italics and bold). 😉

So are plays.

They are inherently pretty unreal…you can see a lot of things when you are in a theatre (all the time), that requires a willing suspension of disbelief.

Now, movies also are unreal…the way that time tends to jump around, for instance.

I suppose one could also argue that movies are two dimensional, and plays are real people…so plays are closer to reality.

I think that you are almost always aware that the stage actor is not actually the character…I think you are more actively engaged watching a play.

That’s just an idea, though. 🙂

I do like the idea of it being reality based. Plays can be very representational, unrealistic. They can compress time, and audiences accept that.

If a movie has a significant time jump (forward or backward) they usually explicitly explain what happened.

What do you think? Is watching a play more like reading a book than watching a movie is? Feel free to tell me and my readers what you think by commenting on this post.

Percentage of books priced $14.99 in USA Kindle store leaps up

November 9, 2015

Percentage of books priced $14.99 in USA Kindle store leaps up

I was looking at the

USA Kindle eBooks storefront (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*)

By default, Amazon now sorts them by “featured” books…presumably, one they have chosen to promote on the site. That doesn’t mean the list itself is manually stacked…it could be that the list is based on something which is manually stacked.

It was interesting to me how many of the books were priced at $14.99. They were popular books from tradpubs (traditional publishers).

If I look at the

USA Kindle store paid bestsellers (at AmazonSmile*)

the story is very different: only two of the top twenty sellers are priced at $14.99.

The number in the featured titles felt intuitively like a big jump to me…but I don’t like to just go with my intuition. 😉

Fortunately, on the first of the month, I do my

Snapshots

and that let me go back and compare the percentages of $14.99 book in the USA Kindle store.

I started with looking at the percentages for the months of this year…and it was dramatic!

14992015

That’s right…even though they aren’t yet 1% of the books in the store, the percentage doubled from October to November.

My next thought was that maybe it is seasonal. Maybe the prices go up every November.

So, I ran Novembers for the past five years:

14995years

2011 2012 2013 2014 2015
0.11 0.17 0.23 0.22 0.8

I also checked the trend for $9.99 over the past five years, to see if there might be a direct correlation:

9995years

It’s a very interesting chart, although it doesn’t show a direct correlation.

The Agency Model, where the publishers set the consumer prices, came into effect for e-books in 2010. That situation ended in 2013.

Now, I think most people who follow this would have expected the percentages of books priced at $9.99 to go up with the Agency Model ending…and the opposite happened (at least based on these November 1st numbers).

It’s worth noting that a modified version of the Agency Model is back…but it certainly doesn’t appear that Amazon lowered a bunch of prices to $9.99 when the Agency Model was over.

It’s intriguing…and not out of line with one of the possible scenarios I’ve suggested.

Tradpub frontlist titles may become more expensive…with hardback brand name author new novels getting, at least in some cases, to a $50 list price. Many are close to $30 now.

That doesn’t mean that everybody will pay that much for books to read. There are many inexpensive Kindle store books…even free ones.

While they aren’t the tradpub frontlist, there are former New York Times bestsellers available as part of

Kindle Unlimited (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*)

We may be moving back towards a much more tiered system of readers. Top tier people paying a premium for the latest books by the best known authors.

Something like that is how it was for a very long time…essentially, until paperbacks in the 1930s.

Then, we would have  a tier that pays for books, including through subsers (subscription services) like  KU.

Third, we would have people who read books for free. They would be much better off than lower tier readers were even ten years ago. There are so many legal free e-books! If a lower tier reader wants to read the latest Stephen King, for example, one possibility is that they’ll be on a waiting list at the public library…a list which might be months long.

How do tradpubs survive with brand name authors in a situation like that?

They charge more for books…and they lower their costs and risks. They stop taking chances on unproven authors…they let someone prove themselves by self-publishing first and showing an audience.

I wonder if that might actually flatten the prices for prestige books. Right now, a publisher will put out a small market book that gets them awards…and charge a lot more for it than for a popular novel. If everything is an expensive micromarket (even popular novels when first released), though, they might not need the price disparity. In other words, a 500 page book on an obscure historical topic might be much closer in price than a 200 page novel is currently.

I’ll keep my eyes on the pricing…

Books, Bond books

November 7, 2015

Books, Bond books

With the latest James Bond movie, SPECTRE, opening in the USA this weekend, I thought a look at James Bond books available for the Kindle was in order.

Ian Fleming wrote fourteen original James Bond books (three are short story collections)…coincidentally, one has to assume, the same number as the “Famous Fourteen” original (Wizard of) Oz books by L. Frank Baum.

Not only are all of what Amazon identifies as the

James Bond (Original Series) (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*)

available for the Kindle, they are in reader-friendly versions: text-to-speech is enabled; they have X-Ray (Amazon’s reference to characters, concepts, and more in a book); they are low price ($2.99 each); and they are available at no additional cost through

Kindle Unlimited (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*)

Amazon’s subser (subscription service) which is $9.99 a month for “all you can read” (and there have been discounts for longer period agreements).

One reason these benefits are available?

The e-books are published by Amazon.

Amazon announced the acquisition of the “backlist” of James Bond for its mystery imprint, Thomas & Mercer back on April 17, of 2012.

Arguably, it’s still the biggest exclusive Amazon has.

I re-read the first book in the series, Casino Royale, in part because of Amazon’s acquisition. I reviewed it here:

Review: Casino Royale

before I generally moved book reviewing to my

Goodreads account

based on feedback from my readers on this blog.

I  found it well-written, although with some (unsurprising) potentially objectionable material.

If I was beginning with Bond, would I start there?

I would…it’s an origin story of sorts.

However, as Tack Carlson noted in my

Surviving “The End”: advice for literary characters (part 1)

first novels are often different…they may shape the characters we then come to know.

That was certainly true for the Oz series (the first and most famous book is my least favorite of the Famous Fourteen…and I often suggest kids start the Oz books with the second in the series), and it’s true here…although this is one of the best of the original Bond books.

Gee, how many parallels are there with the Oz books and Bond? Interesting question which I may explore later…

Anyway, this is a book where Bond has considerable self doubt. There is a notable philosophical debate about the morals of what Bond does…with Bond doing the challenging of the value.

Bond has been huge in popular culture…in addition to the books, there are the movies, and so many other things, including cartoon series, radio, and videogames.

One of my earliest memories is being at a drive-in movie theatre for the original Dr. No movie. Of course, that was so long ago, I wouldn’t consider myself a reliable witness. 😉 I’m also sure I slept through most of it…as my parents no doubt intended. 🙂

The first book was published in 1953, and the series got a huge boost when John F. Kennedy listed one of the Bond books as one of his favorites, and made additional references to Bond.

Fleming’s last Bond book was published posthumously in 1966.

1968 saw famous author Kingsley Amis, who had written a non-fiction book about Bond, continuing the series with

Colonel Sun (at AmazonSmile*)

Unlike the Oz books, though, that didn’t make for a successful, living series.

The series didn’t really resume (although there were novelizations) until 1981’s

Licence Renewed (at AmazonSmile*)

by another author, John Gardner.

That was it: the series was alive again, and has continued since then (Gardner actually wrote more Bond books than Fleming).

Note that License Renewed is not part of what Amazon licensed for Thomas & Mercer. It costs nearly three times as much at $8.99 at time of writing, and is not part of Kindle Unlimited.

I think that’s worth considering, for people who think of Amazon as the “big bad” for readers.

If you want to read James Bond, Amazon is the easiest way to do so. You could get the free month of KU, and if you read quickly enough, read all fourteen of them for free. 🙂 In fact, several people on your account could do it…six at a time for each book. You can only have a total of ten books out at time, so you’d have to coordinate which titles you were all reading to some extent, but it could be done.

If you’d prefer to own them, you can get the 14 e-books for $41.86. Buying them in paperback, they are (again, at time of writing) $7.48 each: $104.72 total.

Now, that doesn’t show that Amazon is better for the publisher or for the author (although it doesn’t show that it isn’t), but for readers who shop at Amazon, we can see the advantages.

If you choose not to shop at Amazon?

Well, that would be a problem if you want to read them as e-books.

Barnes & Noble does carry the Thomas & Mercer p-books…I don’t think you would discover it to be difficult to get the p-books, even if you didn’t shop at Amazon (although you would still be supporting Amazon).

There are so many non-fiction books about Bond! There are fannish specializations, cultural analyses, and trivia books.

A search for James Bond in the USA Kindle store has 775 results, and 235 of those are available through Kindle Unlimited.

If you want to read Bond before (or after) seeing SPECTRE, Amazon makes it easy. Oh, and they also have a single volume

The SPECTRE Trilogy: Thunderball, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, You Only Live Twice (James Bond – Extended Series) (at AmazonSmile*)

By the way, can’t you imagine a scene where Q, Bond’s gadget master, is issuing Bond a top secret, experimental device…

Bond: “Is it a weapon?”

Q: “Some would say so. It’s a portable library: we call it a Kindle.”

Bond: “Books? I’m afraid that would be opening a new chapter in my lethal methodology.”

Q.: “Information is power, Bond. Do pay attention. When you open this special cover, the screen will illuminate. To reveal the list of books, simply swipe your finger across the screen like this. You can then find whatever you might need for background on your latest mission. We have also provided you with special intelligence, which you will find under Docs.”

Bond: “May I?”

Q hands Bond the Kindle. Bond takes it…and then throws it across the lab, where it chops off the head of a target dummy.

Bond: “My mother always told me reading would go to your head…”

An ILMK interview with Adrian Liang, Amazon Books Editor

November 6, 2015

An ILMK interview with Adrian Liang, Amazon Books Editor

When I recently wrote about

Amazon’s 100 Science Fiction & Fantasy Books to Read in a Lifetime

it engendered some interesting conversation on this blog, and that got me quite curious about how the list was put together.

Well, I was very pleased when a member of Amazon’s team was able and willing to arrange an interview for me with the editor of the list

Adrian Liang, Amazon Books Editor

and to share it with you!

Without further ado:

ILMK: Thank you for agreeing to answer these questions for me and my readers about Amazon’s 100 Science Fiction & Fantasy Books to Read in a Lifetime! I always find lists like these fascinating, and I think proud geeks like me are particularly prone to analysis and opinion about them. Before we get started with the list itself, I’m curious: while I’m sure it would be a fantasy job for many of my readers to just read books and make lists about them all day, I suspect that isn’t the sum total of your job description. Could you tell us a bit about what your role is at Amazon, and what your typical day is like?

Adrian Liang (AL): I’m part of a team of six Amazon Books editors whose goal is to recommend great books to readers—which is pretty much a dream job. We’re all insatiable readers, but we do most of our reading at night and on weekends. Most mornings we come in and ask each other what we’ve read the evening before that we liked. We get literally boxes and boxes of advance reading copies from publishers, so when the mail delivery comes, it’s like Christmas every single day.

We have a lot of ways that we alert readers to excellent books. Each month, we select Best Books of the Month, and we let readers know about these picks through a dedicated page on Amazon.com and through our books blog and social media. In mid-November, we select the Best Books of the Year. We compile lists such as 100 Books to Read in a Lifetime—100 Science Fiction & Fantasy Books to Read in a Lifetime is the sixth list in this series. We also write on our books blog, the Amazon Book Review (www.omnivoracious.com), where we review books and interview authors.

There is a LOT of reading involved so that we can make recommendations—but that’s one reason why this is perhaps the very best job in the world.

ILMK: Thanks! Okay, on to the list. Let’s start out with the goals: what did you want to accomplish when you set out to make the list? What effect did you want it to have, and how did you think you would measure its success?

AL: Book lovers are always searching for the next good book, but a lot of the messaging about books (including ours!) focuses on new releases. With these 100 Books lists, we have the opportunity to remind readers of books that were published in the past and that have stood the test of time because they are amazing in various ways. If this list is the final nudge that leads a reader to say, “Fine, okay, I WILL finally read Dune,” then we’ve done our job. We also wanted to set a stake in the ground by calling out a few more obscure titles that we believe deserve more attention than they have received, and by recommending newer books that we think will become future classics.

ILMK: Let’s talk about the process. Being an editor is a collaborative function, and there had to be a lot of discussion about what to include. How did you work with any other people involved with the list?

AL: Every month we have to convince each other what books deserve to be on our Best of the Month lists, so we’re pretty good at discussing books and weighing their merits. SF and fantasy is a genre that is rich with great works, so we started out with an extremely long list. While whittling it down to 150 books wasn’t terribly hard, it was painful to get that list down to 100 books. We know that readers are going to say, “Why didn’t they include [insert amazing book here]?”, which is why we set up a list on Goodreads where readers can vote on which books they consider to be must-reads.

ILMK: The list is called 100 Science Fiction & Fantasy Books to Read in a Lifetime, and as I’m sure you know, both “science fiction” and “fantasy” are difficult terms to define…and some people are adamant that they should be treated separately. Even among diehard geeks, we often end up with Damon Knight’s dictum: “Science fiction is what we point to when we say ‘science fiction.'” How did you determine which books would fit that categorization for the list?

AL: You’re absolutely right—some books can slosh back and forth. We debated whether we should split it into separate lists—100 Science Fiction and then 100 Fantasy—but we decided against it for two reasons. One is that there is a large number of readers who read happily in both genres and don’t really care what the book is labeled as long as it delivers a smashing read. The second is that I don’t think it helps readers to squish books into ever-smaller and more limiting boxes. We read these types of books to expand our minds and our experiences, not to shrink them.er

ILMK: Were there specific rules of inclusion? For example, did the book have to be available to purchase on Amazon? Did it have to have an English language edition (not all of the books on the list were first published in English)? Rules are what make a game fun: were there any you’d like to share?

AL: I know this sounds disingenuous, but honestly, I can’t think of a single rule we came up with when compiling the initial list. We were focused on the qualities of the books themselves. We asked ourselves, what books changed our way of thinking about our world or ourselves? That we go back to over and over again? That we take with us when we move to a new home? That we recommend to people who are looking for a good book, whether they have proclaimed themselves science fiction or fantasy readers or not?

ILMK: One of the biggest challenges for a list like this, after you’ve decided what you’ll consider, is the distribution of titles. Did you, for instance, try to have them distributed somewhat evenly across publication date decades?

AL: That’s a great question. We wanted the final choices to be somewhat balanced between fantasy and science fiction, but we didn’t make it a hard 50-50 split. We also wanted to give the classics their due, as well as include a number of newer books and authors that readers might not have heard of yet but (we think) would want to know about.

ILMK: A more specific type of distribution is author representation. Almost all of the authors are represented by only one entry each, but Neil Gaiman has two, and H.P. Lovecraft has a collection. If limiting the list to one title per author was a general goal (with exceptions), how did you select which single book from an author would make it?

AL: These were among the hardest decisions we made. We ended up limiting the number of titles each author had on the list because we trusted that if a reader picked up a book by that author and liked it, he or she would read other books by that author. For example, it’s the rare reader who would read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and then not read the rest of the books because we didn’t have them on our list.

I admit, we did fudge the author limitation by making Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings one of our picks, even though it was initially published as (and is still published as) three separate volumes. But hey, it’s Tolkien.

ILMK: While readers love to see their tastes confirmed, one of the joys of a list like this is the discovery of new (to the reader) titles. Do any titles stand out to you that you discovered in editing this list?

AL: I loved looking back at the older titles and remembering how I felt when reading them for the first time. I’ve read a lot (but not all) of Robert A. Heinlein’s books, and creating this list made me want to reread some of my favorites as well as dive into his books I haven’t read yet. One of the best parts about creating this list is that when I would tell people what we were working on, they would immediately suggest three or four titles that they loved.

ILMK: Finally, is there anything else you would like to tell my readers about editing this list?

AL: I’m admittedly biased, but my experience is that sci-fi and fantasy readers are a very thoughtful and passionate group. I loved seeing the responses readers had to our list, especially when they disagreed and had their own suggestions. The truth is that there are far more than 100 science fiction and fantasy books that we should read in our lifetime. Let’s all read far, far more than that.

ILMK: I want to thank you again for taking the time and energy to share a little behind the scenes of Amazon’s 100 Science Fiction & Fantasy Books to Read in a Lifetime! No doubt some of my readers will find great reads out of it, and I want to wish you happy reading in the future.

AL: Thanks! Happy reading to you, too!

Big thanks both to Adrian Liang, and to the Amazon team member who arranged it! I really appreciated the thoughtful and insightful answers. This shows clearly to me that the booklover culture is alive and well at Amazon…I particularly enjoyed the Tolkien comment. 😉

First discount on Kindle Voyage! Only for Prime members (PW3 also discounted)

Amazon introduced the top of the line

Kindle Voyage (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*)

more than a year ago (in September of 2014). People who have them tend to like them: 4.4 stars out of 5 average rating, with 7,404 customer reviews at time of writing.

While it doesn’t have audio (so no text-to-speech…a major drawback for me), it is otherwise pretty objectively superior to the

All-New Kindle Paperwhite, 6″ High-Resolution Display (300 ppi) with Built-in Light, Wi-Fi – Includes Special Offers (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*)

It’s lighter, smaller (with the same screen size), and has “page press” buttons.

However, while the PW3 has gone on sale repeatedly in the last year, the Voyage hasn’t been playing that game.

Right now, though, either of the two are $30 off for a limited time…but only for

Amazon Prime (at AmazonSmile*)

members.

That brings the Voyage, in its least expensive configuration, down to $169.99…and the PW3 to as low as $89.99. That’s only $10 more for the PW3 than the entry level Kindle…which doesn’t have the frontlighting that made the PW the most comfortable reading experience I’d ever had (including paper).

I get why Prime may not make sense for some people…but if you can afford the investment in it, and you spend enough at Amazon, it can make a lot of sense. Prime members get so many things, including early access to some of the Black Friday sales.

I’m only guessing, but I would think that if you spend $500 in a year at Amazon on new items (not from the Marketplace), Prime is likely to be a cost benefit to you. I haven’t done the calculations, but that’s my feeling. 😉

They don’t say how long this sale will last, but if you are in the market for a new EBR (E-Book Reader), especially for the holidays, this is a good deal.

Who would be foolish enough to open a new brick-and-mortar bookstore in the Age of Amazon? How about…

November 4, 2015

Who would be foolish enough to open a new brick-and-mortar bookstore in the Age of Amazon?  How about…

Amazon! 😉

I first saw the story that Amazon was opening a brick-and-mortar bookstore in this

The Seattle Times story by Jay Greene

during my morning

Flipboard (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*)

read.

Subsequent to flipping it into my Flipboard magazine, I saw a bunch of stories on it…and one of my regular readers and commenters, Lady Galaxy, alerted me to it a well.

That makes sense…it just seems so odd that Amazon would open a physical bookstore, at least at first blush.

There is this mythology (I don’t mean to make a judgement as to whether it’s true or not…just that there is a large set of beliefs) that Amazon has been killing physical bookstores. Why would that move into that market?

Well, I’m a former brick-and-mortar bookstore manager (and I think I can reasonably say a successful one), and I might be able to give you some insight.

First, I’ve been saying all along that physical bookstores can succeed, nay, thrive in this environment.

That doesn’t mean every physical bookstore.

The big stores that had volume as their main draw…those are doomed. You can’t compete with Amazon on volume with a  physical store.

You can compete with them on experience.

Maybe that will change some day, when we have more robust virtual reality, but for now, there is something in the real world that online shopping doesn’t replicate.

Physical bookstores can, and do, succeed when people will happily pay more money than they would online, because they want to support the store.

That requires that the store has personality and is unique and that, yes, the customers trust the store.

Amazon can do that with “Amazon Books”.

The store will be informed by the website…cards will have online reviews, and at least some categories will be based on the website (“4.5 stars and above”).

However, there is a second, and really important point.

Amazon doesn’t need the physical store to make a profit.

It’s a showcase, not the whole floor.

One of the things they say they are going to do is “face” all of the books…that is, you’ll be able to see the cover on every book, not just the spine.

Quite simply, that’s a lot more expensive.

You are fighting three main things in a physical bookstore:

  • Rent
  • Salaries
  • “Shrinkage” (shoplifting, employee theft, and damage)

You are paying a lot more rent to sell a give title by having it faced. Of course, you can have more copies of a faced book…you might be able to have it four deep. Four spined books might take up the spot of one faced book.

If you want to have a lot of titles, though, you might traditionally only have one or two copies of some of them. That’s where spining books is cheaper.

Amazon is going to have a relatively small store with everything spaced, and a lot fewer titles than, say, a Barnes & Noble…but each one treated more lovingly (with more attention paid to it).

Shopping there (the store is in Seattle) will probably be one of those great experiences I mentioned. The employees will know the books well, in part because there won’t be as many of them, in part because they’ll have more data about them.

It’s going to be such a teeny tiny part of the business, though, that it will be freed of any requirement to make a profit. In a way, it will be like premium cable versus broadcast TV: a much smaller audience without the pressure of ratings.

With all of that said, I also won’t be shocked if Amazon does make a profit on this. Part of that will be their skill at inventory chain management. Yes, they sell out of things at the holidays, but their expertise with shipping  (including using robots in the fulfillment centers) will make a huge difference.

Update: what about pricing? It’s the same as the website! NPR (which I was hearing in the Flash Briefing on our Amazon Echo (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*) did a piece on it…and it sounded like an employee was suggesting that a customer use a SmartPhone to pull up the price on a book in the store (presumably, by scanning the UPC…Universal Product Code…or something similar). That’s one of the challenges for the prices being the same as at the website. Prices at the website vary rapidly…if you have price stickers on the books, how are you going to update them? Do people just not know for sure what the price is  until you are going to ring them up? Presumably so…

It’s a fascinating experiment! I think it’s really a pilot…if it succeeds, you might get an Amazon Books in your town. 🙂

Update: Reader Malcolm Northrup mentioned that a trip to Amazon Books in Seattle was possible, and I thought it would be great to get a field report! That goes for any of you who go to Amazon Books. I thought I’d add a few particular questions here, if you happen to notice:

  • How was the Customer Service? Did staff answer any questions for you?
  • Was there free wi-fi? (You would think they would have it, since this is at least partially a showcase for the website)
  • What categories of books were towards the front of the store? Which ones were in the back?
  • How was the stock level? Were there “wishing wells” of stacks of books on the floor? How many copies of a book were on a shelf?
  • What advantages did you see in this store versus other bookstores? Technology, for example?

Update: this

Publishers Weekly article by Rob Salkowitz

gives us more insight into the store itself.

One of the big questions for me was how they would deal with the fluctuating prices, since the physical store prices are the same as the web prices. Repricing books (with sticker guns) was a big burden when I managed a brick-and-mortar bookstore many years ago. Well, the books don’t have prices like that on them: you use your SmartPhone, and if you don’t have one, an associate helps you.

Update: Amazon Books homepage (at AmazonSmile*

What do you think? If an Amazon Books opened in your town, would you visit it? What would make it attractive enough to make you to return to it? What impact will it have on other bookstores? Feel free to tell me and my reader what you think by commenting on this post.

I’ve heard of booking a cruise, but this is…

November 3, 2015

I’ve heard of booking a cruise, but this is…

…amazing! 😉

Amazon was nice enough to send me information about a recent collaboration they are doing with Princess Cruises.

Theme cruises are quite a thing, and I can see how it can be great. I’ve been on one real cruise like this would be…to Alaska. It wasn’t a theme cruise, but it was so relaxing and fun! I went with my whole family (my parents arranged the whole thing).

Everything we might want was pretty much within reach. We didn’t have to get in a car and drive, whether that was for a meal or shuffleboard or dancing…or reading.

I wouldn’t do this now, but yes, they had a 24-hour ice cream sundae bar. 😉

It was all accessible and felt safe (not that I haven’t read murder mysteries set on cruise ships). 😉

Another interesting thing: there was a lot of time to talk, even to strangers.

That’s how cruising with celebrities can work. It’s a chance for them to talk with fans…and vice versa.

In this

Princess Cruises press release

they announce an upcoming cruise (sailing February 8th…and running for seven days, so it includes Valentine’s Day).

It’s in collaboration with

Kindle Love Stories

which is an online community that Amazon has for romance readers.

It’s part of their traditional publishing group…which includes Montlake, their romance publishing arm.

I haven’t really looked at that before: it looks pretty cool!

Anyway, this cruise has two special guests:

Sylvia Day (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit by shopping*)

and

Meredith Wild (at AmazonSmile*)

They are both New York Times bestselling  authors…who will spend a slow-paced week with fans.

Oh, that doesn’t mean they’ll be available to chat with you whenever you want. 🙂 That have booked events, but there is a pretty good chance you can at least say, “Hi!”

The cost?

Fares start at $649 per person, based on double occupancy.

That may sound like a lot, but it’s not that much when you compare it  to the cost of staying in a hotel (and paying for everything else) for the same amount of time.

They are going to have a chance to win this cruise for two, although it isn’t up yet.

That could be a really indulgent gift for a romance reader!

What is cruising isn’t your thing?

Amazon has three free e-books linked on his page:

Kindle Love Stories (at AmazonSmile*)

They are by three authors going on an earlier cruise which sails today (November 3). It’s sold out (which could happen with the cruise listed above)…and they didn’t alert me to that one. 😉

The books are

  • Kiss Me Maybe by Heather Burch
  • Once Upon a Night at Sea by Barbara Longley
  • To Catch a Bouquet by Carolyn Brown

They are inspired by Princess Cruises.

I think cruises like this are definitely a way to go! It supports literary fandom…and cruises make a lot of sense for bookworms. 🙂

I can think of  a few cruises they could put together where I would definitely consider going! Of course, it might be a bit tougher to find authors that would appeal to both me and my Significant Other, but we’d enjoy the cruise regardless. 😉

How about you? Are there authors that Amazon could arrange to have on a cruise which would make you want to book it? Care to share who they are?

Enjoy the free books!

What do you think? Is Amazon doing cruises a good idea? Does this make you feel like Amazon loves books, or does it just seem like another commercial opportunity? Did you know about Kindle Love Stories? Have you read Sylvia Day or Meredith Wild? Feel free to tell me and my readers what you think by commenting on this post.

Snapshot: November 1 2015

I generally run this information through eReaderIQ.com (it’s just easier than Amazon), and there are some vagaries in the searches (both there and on Amazon). I do try to run it the same way every time, so unless Amazon changes something, it should give you a pretty good idea.  NOTE: I’ve changed this explanation from saying “Jungle-Search.com” to “eReaderIQ.com”. It’s the same people and I assume the results are the same. eReaderIQ is just for the Kindle, Jungle-Search does Amazon generally. eReaderIQ has a slightly better interface for the searches.

* There was also an enhanced audio/visual version of this book for $16.99. I chose to enter it here only in the standard version, since that most closely represents the comparison between paper and e-book versions. It isn’t necessary to pay $16.99: it’s an additional payment for more features

Summary

There wasn’t the anomalistically high jump in prices that there was last month…there wasn’t much movement at all, but what there was, was slightly up. Interestingly, there was a big jump at the $14.99 price point: about double the number of books and the percentage of the total. We have more options, and that’s good: more book to buy, to get for free, to borrow…more Spanish language books, more textbooks,  and the most blogs since we’ve been measuring. We should hit four million titles in the USA Kindle store before the end of November.

Older data were drawn using http://www.jungle-search.com, newer data with http://www.ereaderiq.com (from the same people). There are a number of possible sources of errors (eRi, Amazon, me), but these are probably pretty good.

  • The free books referenced here are from the Kindle store: there are many other sources for free books
  • My search for textbooks definitely has false positives (books that aren’t really textbooks). I search for -domain (to eliminate public domain titles, which would be older books, generally) textbook. That would find a book about textbooks, for example
  • I searched for “Spanish edition” to find Spanish language books. That has some false positives as well
  • I look at price percentages of books in the range of one penny to fifty dollars, to eliminate freebies and limit textbooks
  • The price point analysis is for books at that specific price: it does not represent a range of prices
  • I compared the percentage of price points in the Price Point Analysis when I showed the difference…not the number of books
  • This information is based on what a United States customer sees

* I am linking to the same thing at the regular Amazon site, and at AmazonSmile. When you shop at AmazonSmile, half a percent of your purchase price on eligible items goes to a non-profit you choose. It will feel just like shopping at Amazon: you’ll be using your same account. The one thing for you that is different is that you pick a non-profit the first time you go (which you can change whenever you want)…and the good feeling you’ll get. :) Shop ’til you help! :)
