Meanwhile, at Barnes & Noble: Q2 financials…not looking good for NOOK books

Should we still care what happens at Barnes & Noble?

Yes.

Competition from the NOOK has apparently driven some interesting improvements in Amazon devices over the years (there was a frontlit NOOK before the Paperwhite, for example), features for e-books (B&N had lending first),  Amazon’s price matching them on e-books, and Amazon has followed B&N in dropping the price on hardware.

I think that influence has considerably weakened, though, and may continue to do so.

The NOOK has been tanking, and for a while, I thought that NOOK Books might continue online after the NOOK hardware ceased to be a brand (B&N doesn’t make the tablets any more, but there is a NOOK name).

However, this

press release

makes me more pessimistic about the NOOK Books.

Specifically, there is this, which I will briefly excerpt:

“NOOK sales of $43.5 million decreased 31.9% due primarily to lower content sales.”

Not primarily due to hardware, but to content.

Content for the NOOK is more than just e-books (there are apps, for one), but I was a bit surprised to see that.

Comparable store sales, excluding the NOOK drag, were pretty steady…only down .5%.

That doesn’t mean that p-books (paperbooks) are going to save e-books, though. They mentioned lower online sales…and increase in wages in the stores.

As a former manager of a brick-and-mortar bookstore, I’ve mentioned before, you are fighting three things primarily: rent; wages; and “shrinkage” (shoplifting, employee theft, and damage).

Those are your challenges…but you also have to be a place (nowadays) where people are willing to pay more money than they would pay online to support you.

It doesn’t look like Barnes & Noble is doing that successfully, at least as far as books are concerned.

Toys are going well for them. 🙂 That is, looking at 2015 growth versus 2014 levels.

Seeking Alpha post by Lutz Muller

in a private e-mail. It’s called “Barnes & Noble’s Problems Are Self-Inflicted”, and that’s the basic premise, supported by interesting charts.

The thrust is that B&N is doing worse than the print book business generally.

While the article does start out with what I would consider a debatable statement (“Barnes & Noble (NYSE:BKS) is the only remaining brick-and-mortar mass retailer of books…”) with which I would think Books-A-Million would disagree, I agree with most of what it says.

Check out the first chart in particular, showing the relative rise in what appears to be online sales of p-books perhaps combined with e-books, and brick-and-mortar bookstores.

To be clear, I think bookstores can survive and thrive in the coming decade.

They need to have personality and they need to be a destination shopping experience.

Unfortunately, I don’t think Barnes & Noble at this point is that.

I also managed a brick-and-mortar game store, and my sense is that B&N’s toy/game sales are benefiting by being in a bookstore. I think it gives them a patina of respectability for some people that going to a Toys R Us might not have.

If B&N was just a toy/game store, I’m not convinced they’d survive…they’d be battling Costco, Walmart, Toys R Us, and, importantly, the online retailers…like Amazon.

When I managed a gamestore, we would give you a hands-on experience. We knew the games (we had game nights for the employees), and we’d open a box to show it to you, if you wanted. We did have a shrink wrap machine in the back, so if everything was still good, we could shrink wrap it again.

That wasn’t my idea (I wasn’t the owner, I was a manager), but I certainly had the authority to take something out of stock rather than shrink wrap it again, if I thought it wasn’t as good as new.

I thought that store was a good shopping experience…and customers generally liked shopping there. There were several branches, including one in the Embarcadero in San Francisco (that one was mine). We did a lot of business with German tourists, who were buying role-playing game elements not yet released in Germany.

That was only a small part of what we sold…we also sold boardgames, chess sets, Go, Mah Jongg, darts (a small, but intricate part of the selection), and more.

We did some radio advertising (I was in a commercial).

We had media coverage of an event I designed, the Great Game Race.

If it had been a bookstore? It could make it, with proper management…maybe not in the Embarcadero, though. 😉

Back to B&N…

I don’t claim to be good at predicting what will happen to stock, but I think this is not good for B&N tomorrow. Some people might go bargain shopping after a drop, but honestly, I wouldn’t be investing in it.

Amazon will still have challengers…remember how entrenched the big  publishers were before e-books. Amazon has an increasing amount of the infrastructure of the internet, but would it be harder to  disrupt them than it was to disrupt the near totality of the big publishers in the brick-and-mortar bookstores?

Again, I would say yes. 🙂

Amazon is a lot more flexible.

It’s more of an idea (several ideas, actually) than one existing process.

I think they can swivel in a way that the big publishers and brick-and-mortar stores couldn’t.

Barnes & Noble has tried some things…I don’t know that they are the right things, but they did make an effort.

Holiday Deals on Kindle Books (replaces Monthly Kindle Deals) for December

Amazon does the Kindle Daily Deal (at AmazonSmile…benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*), which used to discount four books a day (often general fiction, a romance, a science fiction/fantasy book, and a kids’ book). Now, it seems like it is generally more books than that, and not categorized.

They usually do Monthly Kindle Book Deals for $3.99 or less each (at AmazonSmile). This month, though, that same link takes you to Holiday Deals on Kindle Books (as it did last month). They do end at the end of the month) There are many more of these than the typical monthly deals: 1,188 at the time of writing…more than 100 more than last month! They are up to 85% off…but some of them are more than the normal $3.99 top limit Weirdly, the most expensive one I found was $13.99 (which is just like last month…there was one for $13.99), and did not appear to be discounted…I thought that might be a fluke last time, but having it happen two months in a row is…odd. One other was $5.99, though, and down from there.

Those prices only apply to the USA, and one weird thing is that some of the books seem to sell out at that price sometimes (or become unavailable for some other reason).

Another thing is that 426 of these are available through

Kindle Unlimited (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*)

Amazon lists that information prominently…and it’s now commonly a filter in search results. If they are, then you need to consider whether it is worth buying them…even at these low prices. While they are in KU, you can, if you are a subscriber (and there’s a free month available right now), read them at no additional cost. There are, of course, advantages to owning books, especially if you want to re-read them. A book could move out of KU at any time. Even if you think you want to own it, if you are a KU member, you could always read it first to make sure. 😉 I will mark them with KU.

By the way, in the new version of the

you can make KU a filter. So, you can search for books by an author, a keyword, an average customer review which you can read as part of your KU membership…nice! I’m not associated with eReaderIQ except as a user (we have had some correspondence), but I do think it is the most valuable website for Kindleers.

Summary

The standout is a leap upwards in free non-public domain books…more than 50% increase with well over 10,,000 more free books! Speaking of more more books, the USA Kindle store broke four million titles for the first of these Snapshots. Otherwise, the trends were generally good.

Older data were drawn using http://www.jungle-search.com, newer data with http://www.ereaderiq.com (from the same people). There are a number of possible sources of errors (eRi, Amazon, me), but these are probably pretty good.

• The free books referenced here are from the Kindle store: there are many other sources for free books
• My search for textbooks definitely has false positives (books that aren’t really textbooks). I search for -domain (to eliminate public domain titles, which would be older books, generally) textbook. That would find a book about textbooks, for example
• I searched for “Spanish edition” to find Spanish language books. That has some false positives as well
• I look at price percentages of books in the range of one penny to fifty dollars, to eliminate freebies and limit textbooks
• The price point analysis is for books at that specific price: it does not represent a range of prices
• I compared the percentage of price points in the Price Point Analysis when I showed the difference…not the number of books
• This information is based on what a United States customer sees

I was excited to see what Amazon would do with the

for Cyber Monday, and they certainly didn’t disappoint! 816 (at time of writing) books, up to 85% off…including

for $4.99…one of the most talked about and best selling books of the year (the early draft version of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird (at AmazonSmile)).

In fact, I would think that anybody reading this blog will be able to find a book which they would want to read, or have read, or would give as a gift in this group.

Remember that you can buy the book today at the sale price, and schedule its delivery to your recipient on the appropriate gift giving occasion.

One thing I’m still not seeing is a bundle I had heard was coming…these links currently don’t go anywhere:

You are probably thinking about gifts right now, and while I recently wrote

I know that a lot of you will want to give somebody a specific book…and that you prefer to do a well-known book (or at least, a well-known author).

Well, this a weekend when e-book prices may be particular volatile. There may be even better deals on some things on this Monday (November 30th)…Cyber Monday.

However, I think these recent price drops are well-known giftable books are worth noting…I don’t think they’ll tend to drop more on Monday, although with the potential of price matching, it could happen.

Before I list a few, I want to praise

which I consider to be the most valuable resource for Kindleers on the web.

They have a lot of free services…and this post is possible in part because of their “Price Drops” feature.

You can list specific books with them, and they’ll send you a free e-mail when it drops an amount you specify.

They also, though, list price drops across the Kindle store. You can filter and sort that, which I’ve done…and then I made the choices I thought would be most valuable for you.

I only looked at books which had dropped at least 30% and had at least 500 customer reviews.

Check the price before you click or tap that Buy button…prices could change at any time, and they may not apply in your country (I have readers around the world).

2015: Things I’m thankful for in  e-books, Kindles/Fires, and at Amazon

Yesterday, on Thanksgiving, you may have taken some time with your friends and family to reflect on thing for which you feel grateful. As I’m sure is the case with most of you, I could name meaningful things in my circle.

For this post, I wanted to focus on something a bit different, but continue in the spirit of  thankfulness.

These are some of the things for which I’m grateful in the areas covered by this blog, or related to this blog. Even though the title says “2015”, by no means did I just start getting the benefits of all of these this year. 🙂

These also don’t cover everything…I’m a pretty grateful person. 😉

Here they are, in no particular order:

• Well, I said no particular order, but I do want to say this one first. 🙂 I’m thankful for you, my readers. I’m thankful when you catch my errors, or when you respectfully disagree, or when you make me think something new or see something from a new perspective. Yes, I’m also thankful when you tell me you like something 🙂
• I’m also particularly thankful  for subscribers! You are one of the main things that makes it possible for me to do this and share it with you 🙂
• I’m thankful for increasable text sizes
• I’m thankful for text-to-speech! I use it typically for hours a week in the car
• Thank you to WordPress for having a free blogging platform!
• I’m thankful for the copyright laws that make older books legally available free, and for the people and organizations (especially Project Gutenberg) digitizing and distributing those books**

• I’m thankful for the triple tap on my Fire tablets which magnifies whatever is on the screen

• I’m thankful for being able to go back to a book, and have it be right where I left off
• Oh, I’m really thankful for being able to search books!
• I’m thankful for readers of the blog who are tolerant of posts that aren’t all their favorite kind 😉
• I’m thankful for everybody who comments, and participates in the polls
• I’m thankful the person at Amazon who recently arranged an interview for me, and for Adrian Liang for such interesting and informative answers

Surviving “The End”: advice for literary characters (part 3)

This is part 3 of a piece which began here.

“Good afternoon! I figure you all know this by now, seeing as how this is the third lecture in this series, but my name’s ‘Tack’ Carlson. I’ve learned a couple of your names, but I have to tell you, I’m pretty good with faces. I think that’s  part of  being a lawyer, at least of  the courtroom variety. We’re pretty good observers, and right decent at telling how you feel about things. After all, that’s my job: to get you to feel a certain way about the facts, and I can’t change your feelings if I can’t tell what they are now.

I don’t see any unfamiliar folks out there…did you all attend the first two talks? Great! Don’t worry, there isn’t going to be a test. You’ll get those in your regular classes here at Fictional Character University…I’m just a guest speaker for an elective.

Let’s just do a little review first.

The name of this series is Surviving ‘The End’. Everybody in here is a lead character in a first novel which is still in a draft. I’m hoping to help you get past that first novel and on to a second.

I’m not going  to claim to have all the answers, but I’ve done it myself, and I can humbly say, well as much as a lawyer can ever be humble, that I know something about the topic.

In the first talk, I told you about

Rule #1: You have to accept change.

I explained how long-lasting characters usually have some kind of stress in their first novels, or just before the novel starts. It’s part of your origin story, and helping the real-worlders get to where you are…at least in their heads.

In the second one, we discussed

Rule #2: Be the same.

Anybody remember what else I called that?”

“The principle of ‘Ride the same horse'”.

“Yep! Antares, isn’t it?”

“You grok.”

“Just knowing somebody’s name is a pretty low thresholding for grokking,  isn’t it?”

“Maybe I didn’t say it just because you knew my name.”

“Maybe not. I remember we had a nice piece of dialog. Ready to ride with me a bit further?”

“Sure.”

“Well, I’m  pretty sure Antares knows the answer, but what’s the topic of today’s talk?”

“Have interesting friends?”

“Yes…friends and enemies, for that matter. Thanks for giving Antares time to respond to some texts…although I’m guessing you’ve been doing that all along. What’s your name?”

“Sujay Rodriguez, but they call me ‘C.J.’. I’m a safety inspector.”

“Do you inspect anything in particular?”

“I used to work for a state agency, but my job got eliminated. I got a decent severance package, so now I freelance…anything, anywhere, any time.”

“How does that work? How do you have all that knowhow?”

“Most safety issues involve the same thing…somebody doing something stupid. That usually isn’t the guy who gets hurt…it’s the guy who told the guy who got hurt what to do.”

“I see.”

“The rest of it’s just a matter of doing the research.”

“I understand doing research. Not sure I’d want to have you on a jury in a negligence case, but there’s nothing wrong with that. I wouldn’t want to have most of us characters on a jury…we have a tendency to take over. You know, a lot of strong personalities.

That brings me to today’s topic.

We have those strong personalities, but that’s not enough. We need to have other folks around us, too…and interesting folks.

They can be a lot of things: sidekicks; bosses; friends; lovers; enemies…there are a lot of choices.

Here, let me demonstrate with something I call the ‘And Chain’.

We talked about Sherlock Holmes before. If I say, ‘Sherlock Holmes and…’, and you know I’m talking about another person, what would you say? ‘Watson’, right? Let’s keep going…give me a different answer. Holmes and…”

“Professor Moriarty.”

“And…”

“Mrs. Hudson.”

“And..”

“Inspector Lestrade.”

“And…”

“The Baker Street Irregulars.”

“Good answer! We  could keep going. All of these characters are memorable. All of them have appeared in more than one Holmes title. Real world readers know them.

How about a more recent example…Stephanie Plum. Stephanie Plum and…”

“Lula!”

“Morelli!”

“Grandma Mazur!”

“Ranger…he’s hot!”

“Well, it sounds like the class generally agrees with you. Let’s keep going. Stephanie Plum and…”

“Uh…Vinny?”

“Yes, he owns the Bail Bonds business…and he’s Stephanie’s cousin.”

“Rex!”

“That’s not a character!”

“Actually, I would consider Rex, the hamster, a character…and I reckon my horse Seafounder would agree with me. Characters don’t have to be human beings…heck, dogs and cats have been main characters, along with a whole slew of other species. There are other human characters, and if I name off a few I think most of you will recognize them: Connie, who also works in the Bonds office; Grandma Bella; Moon-Man Dunphy;  and that’s not even counting crossover folks and one-timers.

The point is, you might be super interesting, but you aren’t enough.  Humans are social animals: it wouldn’t seem realistic to the real-worlders, so to speak, if you existed in a vacuum. Besides, some people are going to read your books just to catch up on those other characters…and them reading your books is what’s going to keep you alive.”

“Speaking of staying alive, shouldn’t Rex be in the Guinness book as the oldest hamster ever?”

“Well, he’s not as old as Sherlock Holmes, and he is still going strong. I wanted to introduce you to somebody. Come on out! This here’s Catherine Ketcham, better known as–“

“Catch ’em Kate!”

“Thank you, Antares. How many of you have heard of Catch ’em Kate? Great! How would you describe the character?”

“A female bounty hunter?”

“Just a bounty hunter will do, mister. My sex ain’t got nothin’ to do with it.”

“Easy, Kate. I’m sure that’s how Stephanie Plum get described, too.”

“That don’t make it right, Tack. What’s wrong for me is wrong for that Jersey gal.”

“Gender and diversity is an issue that we can save for another time.”

“Ain’t it always?”

“I wanted to give it a full session, that’s all. You know I’ve never treated you any differently.”

“That’s for durn sure.”

“Um…where was I? Right, the importance of having other characters like Kate with you in your stories. What I do as a lawyer would be pretty tame…Kate runs them down, and that brings a needed boost of adrenaline to the Courtroom Cowboy novels.”

“Yep…and then you get them bonded out again.”

“If I do, that just gives you another chance to bring them in, right? Twice the bounty.”

“Them’s lawyerin’ words. You always did know how to turn scat into flapjacks.”

“Does anybody have any questions?”

“Where’s Dusty Ambush?”

“I was hoping for a question for Kate, who was kind enough to join us today.”

“Tell ’em, Tack.”

“Okay, Kate. It is educational, even if…emotionally uncomfortable. Dusty was too weak to make the trip. While I’ve been lucky enough to keep getting new books and stories published, not to mention the adaptations, and to have Kate’s assistance, Dusty…well, Dusty hasn’t been in a new novel for, oh, thirty years or so. You’ve heard about characters fading into obscurity…that’s what’s happening with Dusty. He’s getting weaker and weaker…some days, it’s hard to even make out what he’s saying.”

“Sad.”

“That’s  something you all have to understand. As long as real-worlders are reading you, you’ll stick around. Having new stories for them helps, but if they are reading your old stuff, that will keep you strong and vital.”

“Tack!”

“Gerry Carlyle! Sorry for the interruption, class. This is Gerry Carlyle, from the Interplanetary Hunter stories. Gerry, can this wait? I’m in the middle of a lecture.”

“Sorry, no. It’s an emergency.”

“Did you need Kate?”

“We could always use another strong arm, but we also need a lawyer…and that means you, ‘Professor'”.

“I guess that ends today’s lecture, then. I’ll have the school let everybody know if we need to reschedule the next one. Gerry, can you at least tell them the nature of the case?”

“Rather not.”

“Who else is with you?”

“Jimgrim, Edward Malone, Frank Reade, and Mrs. Paschal.”

“Sounds like you’ve got plenty of room for me and Kate. Let me ask you: that spaceship of yours have room for a few observers?”

“There’s room.”

“Thanks! I’m sure you don’t mind if I bring along a few of these students…it would be great for them to see a real adventure, and I think they could be helpful.”

“As long as they aren’t just deadheading.”

“Oh, they’ll work, I’m sure. Everybody’s signed field trip releases, right?  Or had their legal guardians give approval? Good. Antares…the baker…and let’s bring the cat. As for the rest of you, I want you to think about those three lessons: embrace the change, be the same, and have interesting friends and enemies. If you have any questions, send me an e-mail.

One last thing…Gerry,  I hate to ask you this, but–“

“Seafounder’s already onboard in one of the holding pens.”

“That horse is a durn sight smarter than Tack, anyway.”

“You know, Gerry, if you aren’t sure there’s enough room to take all of us, maybe Ms. Ketcham…never mind, I’m just kidding. Kate’s right about Seafounder…although it sounds like my legal education might be of some small use in this instance.”

 “I told you we needed you. Look, we need to go now…you two can argue after we blast off.”

“I’m sure we will…it wouldn’t be much fun if we didn’t. I hate to leave the class in such suspense…can’t you just give them a hint?”

“Professor Challenger’s been arrested.”

“Where are we going? I’ll need to study up on local jurisdiction on the way.”

“Barsoom…”

Meanwhile, at the second largest USA bookstore chain…

Okay, yes, Amazon has opened one brick-and-mortar bookstore, and many indie bookstores are doing well, but I’m sure there are a lot of people who think that a bookstore means a chain bookstore.

They were quite dominant for a while…driven, in no small part, by Barnes & Noble (which is still the largest USA bookstore chain).

The second largest chain, Books-A-Million (AKA BAM!) just reported their financials.

How did they do?

Well, according to this

press release

revenue was down slightly for the past 39 weeks, and the loss (no profit) was bigger. The latter, I believe, is impacted by money they spent in trying to get acquired (not a done deal).

Terrance G. Finley, the CEO (Chief Executive Order), credits adult coloring books to some extent…but Amazon has those, too.

However, another element cited by Finley is something that I think really makes sense for brick-and-mortar bookstores to do (and I’m a former manager of one).

That’s personal appearances.

Sure, Amazon could do virtual things, but it isn’t the same as shaking hands with somebody.

In this case, it was a best-selling author, but also a celebrity: Finley credited multiple appearances by Dr. Ben Carson.

Barnes & Noble is pushing their non-book items this holiday season, in addition to their

Signed Editions by Acclaimed Authors

promotion on Black Friday, which I do think is really cool and was successful for them last year.

However…

I do think it’s important that bookstores tie into local authors and celebrities. Barnes & Noble has always done that, and I assume Books-A-Million does. It’s just that I think that’s important for your customers’ perceptions of you.

I’ve said before, I do think that physical bookstores can succeed in the current (and upcoming) marketplace…you just have to be the kind of place where people are willing to spend more money because they want to support you. They need to like you and the shopping experience, and they need to want to support what they believe are your principles.

BAM! losing more money this year than last is a concern. Making a chain thrive, at this point, is actually more difficult than making an individual independent thrive…and that’s a reversal.

The chains needed those numbers and the similarity from store to store. You wanted to be able to walk into a B&N in any city, be able to find your way around, and have them have what you wanted.

Now, you can shop from Amazon from any city, and it feels familiar.

The indie, on the other hand, can get by on being unusual in what it carries and in how it is presented.

BAM! may get purchased. I don’t see them failing in the next year…and if something serious happens with B&N (which I think is more likely…at least for their physical locations), BAM! would pick up a lot of that business.

Barnes & Noble will do their latest financials webcast on December 3rd at 5:00 PM Eastern…right after the market closes.

Bonus story: big congratulations to my sibling, whose debut novel

One Murder More (at AmazonSmile: benefit a non-profit of your choice by shopping*)

is one of approximately 6,000 books in Amazon’s only physical bookstore! We had a conversation about what that means, and I think it’s very significant. Amazon has a tiny fraction of the books on the website in the physical store…they need to be highly-rated, and/or award winning. One Murder More has 4.7 stars out of 5, with 63 customer reviews. I said to my sibling that that wasn’t enough, though. Having a high rating is like having a qualified resume for a job…if you get 500 resumes, 450 of them might be immediately rejected as unqualified. They still need to decide to hire you, though. 🙂

I also think Amazon doesn’t particularly care if people buy the books in the store…they can discover them there and buy them online (the price is the same), that’s fine with them.

I told my sibling I think the biggest advantage of this is the imprimatur of Amazon having chosen to put it in the store. I said (approximately), “I guarantee that representatives from other bookstores, including the chains, are watching very carefully which books Amazon puts in Amazon Books in Seattle.”

If you walk into Amazon’s physical store, you want them to have books discovered by their millions of customers. You want it to be something different from what your local bookstore has. The local bookstore has the wisdom of the buyer (who is probably the owner). Amazon Books has the wisdom of the crowd…that, at least, is going to be the perception.

We’ll see if this affects the sales. I recommended promoting the fact:  “One of the few books chosen to be in Amazon’s only physical bookstore”.

Whether it does or doesn’t, though, it still deserves a huzzah! 🙂 HUZZAH!

This is a “doorbuster”, so they could run out…and the price may not be available online. This is also unofficial at this point.

We also expect Amazon to have the same device at that price…but we don’t know when or for how long.
